Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Cunningham
Hi Tyler, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Tyler Cunningham Photography began from a place of storytelling. I don’t think I knew that storytelling was the heart of my work when I started my company in 2006, but over the years I have realized this is my why. I am intensely curious about people’s stories. Where they’re from, what they’re passionate about, what makes them laugh out loud and also what makes them most vulnerable. It is in the art of seeing another for all that they are, all that they offer to the world, that we are able to capture their true essence. This is what I have always done but I’m better at defining it for others now.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have a quote on my wall in my office by Joseph Chilton Pearce that reads “To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong”. In the course of starting and growing a business, I have been wrong many times. I have said the wrong thing, quoted a project too high (or too low), procrastinated or forgotten to follow up with a client. There are so many ways to feel like you’ve failed as a business owner because you are ultimately responsible. But we can not lean fully into who we are and who we’re meant to be without making peace with those struggles and rising to meet them.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the founder and owner of Tyler Cunningham Photography. Above all, I believe in connection – that through connection, we allow others to be seen and valued. As a photographer and storyteller, this connection allows me to capture my client’s story in a way that honors the human experience that is uniquely theirs. My work includes personal branding, headshots, family photography, senior portraits and milestone events. I approach every relationship with the goal of telling a meaningful story.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
While taking inspiration from others is imperative, believing in your own unique talents and leaning into those is the secret sauce to success.
