Meet Wendy Coulter of Hummingbird Creative Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Coulter.

Hi Wendy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In 1995, I walked into a Cary Chamber of Commerce expo, where I met our first three clients, who needed some typesetting, logo design work, and t-shirt graphics. That day was the official launch of Hummingbird, a creative endeavor born out of a side hustle and a passion for solving problems through design. What started as a boutique graphic design studio in my condo in Cary, NC is now a national award-winning, full-service branding firm.

The early years were defined by agility, resourcefulness, and a drive to meet every client need. The hummingbird became our perfect symbol, as we embraced the ethos of “flying forwards, backwards, sideways, and upside down” to creatively solve problems for growing businesses. As our clients’ needs evolved, so did we. What began with graphic design and print projects soon expanded into a full suite of services, including brand strategy, digital marketing, advertising, and web design. We grew from a solo operation to a dedicated team, with each member bringing a unique spark and expertise.

Over the past three decades, we have had the privilege of helping hundreds of best-in-class brands (over 400, to be precise, but who’s counting?) across 24 industries take flight. Our work has been recognized with more than 105 industry awards, a testament to our commitment to building business value through better branding. Today, our focus is on brand: brand strategy, brand identity, brand awareness, brand loyalty, and branded environments.

It’s been an amazing flight, and in August 2025, we proudly celebrated 30 years of success. From those first three clients at a local expo to a team helping companies nationwide, our story is one of transformation and unwavering passion. We’ve learned that branding is more than just a logo or a tagline—it’s about defining your company’s purpose and building a defensible leadership position that increases brand valuation and profitability.

Our commitment extends beyond our clients. We believe in giving back to the community that has supported us. Through our HummingHearts program, we use our skills and resources to assist local non-profits. This dedication to community also inspired a personal passion for me and led to the creation of the North Carolina Women Business Owners Hall of Fame, a non-profit organization that honors and elevates the achievements of female entrepreneurs across North Carolina.

Here’s to many more years of helping brands take flight and SOAR!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey of business ownership is a marathon, not a sprint, and there have been many challenges along the way. Early on, I faced a mountain of personal debt from a lack of business knowledge. By 2002, the pressure was immense, with advisors telling me to give up and file for bankruptcy. However, a life-changing conversation with a CPA gave me the clarity and a plan to succeed. With determination, I paid off every bit of debt in less than two years and have been proudly debt-free ever since.

Navigating people has also been a significant part of the journey. I’ve learned that confidence doesn’t always reflect a strong work ethic. I’ve had to make tough decisions, from handling an employee who threw a chair in a fit of rage to confronting staff who attempted to steal my clients after leaving. These experiences taught me the importance of building a team based on trust and shared values.

Relationships with mentors and clients have also presented hurdles. I once had a mentor who, despite her success, tried to tear down my personal confidence with criticisms about my appearance. It was a painful lesson about personal judgment and the importance of staying true to myself. I’ve also had to learn to say no to clients who are not a good fit for our corporate culture. A particularly difficult experience with a client who struggled with addiction reinforced the need to protect myself and my team, and to only work with people we know, like, and trust.

Through it all, I’ve continuously adapted to overcome challenges. From the dot-com bubble and the 9/11 attack to the COVID-19 crisis, I’ve had to pivot to survive and thrive. My husband says Hummingbird is still around decades later because I just won’t ever give up no matter what.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

How do you think about happiness?
Well, so many things bring me JOY!

Personally, I am most happy spending time with my family: my husband, James; my daughter, Callie (2025-2026 Senior at Cary High School); my mom, Betty and my stepfather, Bill; and our tricolor corgi, Rocky! We love to travel together as a family and enjoy time together. My daughter, Callie, has been a driving force in my professional life since she was born. I take her with me to Women Business Owner events so she can be exposed to other fabulous women, and I hope I am the best role model she will ever have. When she says, “I want to be like mom,” it makes me so proud!

Professionally, I am happy when I am supporting others – from educating someone on the value of branding at a webinar or consulting on vision and core values, to sharing my personal entrepreneurship stories, mentoring business owners to help them reach their goals, or brainstorming with my team on a new big idea. I absolutely love to speak about any of my passions — branding, marketing, entrepreneurship, championing women business owners, or finance and investing.

I am also happy supporting my community because it has supported me, my family, and Hummingbird in so many ways for the past 30 years! That’s why we created HummingHearts, our way of saying thank you and giving back. HummingHearts is our commitment to doing good through creative work and compassionate action. Over the past 30 years, we’ve given over $1 million in discounted and pro-bono services to more than 50 local, regional, national, and international non-profits. Whether it’s amplifying the voice of a local non-profit or mentoring aspiring creatives, we show up with heart.

Finally, celebrating the North Carolina Women Business Owners Hall of Fame inductees each year is so personally fulfilling. I didn’t understand the impact this organization would have over time when I founded it in 2018, and I love how it creates a true source of inspiration and a legacy for future generations of female entrepreneurs.
