Hi Women Behind the Decks: Charlotte’s Female DJs Are Changing the Sound, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
SkinnyJay & Friends was founded in Los Angeles, now relocated as a Charlotte-based creative platform and event series founded by Javarian “SkinnyJay” Holley through his company,Its mission is to connect and elevate local creatives by bringing together music, visual art, fashion, photography, and
entrepreneurship under one roof.
My commitment to community also extends to mentorship and creative support. Through my platform, I celebrates the accomplishments of women DJs, amplifies their work, and helps create spaces where they can grow professionally while inspiring the next generation of female artists. My efforts contribute to a more inclusive and vibrant music culture in Charlotte, where women DJs are recognized not only for their skills behind the turntables but also for their influence on the city’s creative landscape.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Women DJs continue to make a significant impact on the Charlotte music scene, but many still encounter challenges, One of the most common obstacles is overcoming gender stereotypes. Women DJs are sometimes underestimated or expected to prove their technical skills before being taken seriously. Many navigate this by consistently delivering high quality performances, developing their craft, and building a strong reputation through professionalism and reliability,balancing career growth with personal responsibilities can present another hurdle, especially for DJs who are also parents, students, or work full-time jobs.
They often manage this by carefully planning their schedules, setting priorities, and building support systems that allow them to pursue their passion while maintaining other commitments.
Despite these challenges, many women DJs continue to thrive by creating supportive networks, mentoring one another, and organizing events that intentionally highlight women and other underrepresented artists, their resilience, creativity, and commitment to their craft are helping reshape the music industry and inspire the next generation of DJs.
