Today we’d like to introduce you to Yareni Silva.
Hi Yareni, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a 26 year old Mexican hairstylists and makeup artist. My interest for beauty began as a child I would see other girls and notice how they looked different than me. I noticed their clothes, shoes, accessories but what stood out the most was their faces and hair.
I wasn’t taught how to braid or much I just learned by myself. Many things I learned on my own. When I was in the 3rd grade I received a bad haircut from a family hairstylist, my family was poor so I could not afford an actual salon. My mother had 9 kids from young I always felt distant and over looked. I think that the beauty industry has been a stepping stone in my life. It has helped me overcome teasing, sadness, loneliness and more.
As a kid I faced a hard challenge sexual abuse. I dealt with molestation for many years from 3 or 4th grade until some of my sophomore year in high school. I too lost family, friends, and I also have a life threatening immune disease. The beauty industry has surely helped me to gain happiness and some confidence.
Just as anyone my life has been rocky I began experimenting with drugstore makeup when I was in 6th grade wet n wild and la colors were my go to brands. My parents didn’t have a lot of money so I wasn’t able to purchase things other than drugstore or second items from yard sales. They did try to give me more than what they could afford several times. Like on my graduation in 8th grade, 12th grade graduation, and prom.
They even helped pay for my tuition in cosmetology school. In high school my parents pushed me to take a Cosmetology course while in high school so I did. I was already doing my neighbor’s hair sometimes and some family would contact me for hair and makeup too. After high school I began schooling in another city 1 hour and 10 mins away thanks to my parent’s advice. Even though my parents helped me they were also strict they stopped driving me because I started spending some nights at my boyfriend’s house. Being Mexican I was taught about life daily I grew up quickly yet I’m still struggling and I don’t have my life together.
In 2015 i started Cosmetology school in High Point it took me about 2 years to graduate from it since I would quit and reinstate. Whether it was a job, depression, health issues, or even discouragement from not fitting in I wasn’t consistent.
Due to my inconsistency I had to pay some left over tuition for missing so many days. I didn’t pay it because I couldn’t afford it so I just let it be. In 2019 I got a call from school then told me that my 4 years of hours were going to expire. I asked my mother in law for the money she helped me pay the leftover tuition, the state board exams and my license.
After 2019 I did not do much with my license in 2020 I worked as a hairstylist at great clips for 10 months. I gave a lot of my effort to that job and felt so recked after I was let go. I too was dealing with a split between my bf and I. We had a daughter so it was much harder. When Covid hit I felt like if I was going insane I had to take a break from my daughter because I was having thoughts of hopelessness and didn’t want to just wake up one day and end my life.
I got help started therapy I was on different medications and got diagnosed with PTSD, Anxiety and severe depression I am more progressing now. I still struggle like every one but I am so happy that I can actually feel happy and smile at times. I love how at my job my coworkers tell me how they live that I smile and am like a sponge where people soak up my happiness.
I am on a road to success and independence my goal is to be a happy wonderful mama and role model I have so many ideas I would like to make happen. I am happy to know that I can dream. I am a PT Licensed beauty Advisor at Sephora I help clients by creating a skincare regimen, I help clients find the right foundation, concealer, or products. I am working on gaining a loyal clientele by offering services for makeup applications, skincare treatments, and or 1 on 1 classes. I am also trying to grow my following and create a brand for me on social media.
I now am trying to find a great apartment to move in to for me and my daughter, being reliable at my job, and finding a balance between work, life, and friends.
Thank you to everyone who has, is or wants to support me.
