Today we’d like to introduce you to Zuri Hester.
Hi Zuri, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m originally from Durham and I attended NCCU where I discovered my love of cooking and creating dishes. I then went on to Johnson & Wales to start my culinary journey.
When I returned to Durham, I had no luck finding an adequate position for my skills aka I couldn’t find a job, lol. While working with my step-mom and Dad doing administrative work for them, they encouraged me to bite the bullet and start my own restaurant which is what I truly desired.
Looking back now that was pure insanity lol. But I did at age 25, I opened Nzingas Breakfast Cafe now known as Nzingas Kitchen which has been in existence for almost 8 years now serving the best Shrimp & Grits and French Toast you have experienced thus far!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not one bit! I didn’t know the basic fundamentals of running a business and creating systems. So I went thru so many learning curves with marketing, digital presence, dealing with employees, taxes, creating the most efficient menu, and most important capital.
I started my business without capital which I would not recommend for any full-service restaurant model. This dictated a lot. Being so young and not having been in business long or having access to assets did not make me a good candidate for a business loan.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Nzingas Kitchen is a hidden gem in Durham. We offer a fusion menu between brunch, soul food, and creole-inspired dishes. We are famously known for our Creole Shrimp & Grits and Signature French Toast.
Oh and can’t forget the Strawberry Lemonade! We have been a part of the Proud Hayti District for almost 8 years.
We have recently been closed for renovations and Plan to have a Grand Re-Opening the mid weekend in October 2022.
What do you think about happiness?
Talking to my customers and being a part of the community I grew up in. It’s having a sense of belonging and knowing that even though there are so many restaurants in Durham we still make an impact.
