Rising Stars: Meet Adriana Brathwaite of South Raleigh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adriana Brathwaite

Adriana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began running track and field in my freshman year of high school, but like many track and field athletes my love of running began on the playground. I was always the fastest during tag, and I discovered my love for racing on field days. When I got to high school, I found the track coach and told him I was going to be on the team, he recounts this story to my mother saying no one has ever done that before, thus beginning my track and field career. I signed senior year to Central Connecticut State University, and competed for four years there. At the conclusion of my senior year I made the decision to transfer to St. Augustine’s University to pursue my professional track and field career.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Athletics are always a rocky road, and mine is no different. Junior year I began to experience intense pain in my low back which began to spread down my leg and up my back, I continued to compete indoor track and field up until I was struggling to walk. After receiving my MRI results, I was informed that I had three herniated discs, spinal arthritis, and stress fractures up and down the length of my spine. The doctors and athletics trainers told me I had risked my life running, and that they weren’t sure if I’d ever compete again. After 6 months of physical therapy, chiropractor visits, and training I returned to the track, and claimed the 100m individual title.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a track and field athlete and content creator I am in pursuit of a career in the professional circuit of track and field. I create content to connect with fans, and to show the community the ins and outs of track and field.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Ever since I was young I’ve been bubbly, loving, and an extremely driven individual. I was the perfect student growing up. Academics came easy and I was extremely invested, yet track did not come as easy. My discipline and drive have allowed me to be successful in this sport.
