Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Jenkins.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always had a passion for doing hair but my biggest supporter would have to be my husband. I loved doing my hair and my family’s hair. My husband asked if that was my passion and if I could see myself doing that as my career. That sparked an interest in finding out how to make my passion my career and that was probably one of the best decisions I ever made! I started my first salon Job at TwistedScizzors in Cary as a front desk associate while still in cosmetology school. I received my cosmetology license and then I was an Apprentice for Amanda Kimball. A few months later, I became a level one Stylist at Twistedscizzors and worked up to a level two stylist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I faced many challenges in my career. A few months after I became a stylist, Covid-19 hit and I was unemployed for two and a half months. Going from being social with my clients and working to being cooped up in the house with nowhere to go and not much of a social life for me was hard, being an extrovert with no one to be social with was hard but I got through it with walks outside and many Zoom calls and picked up a hobby of making jewelry. When things started to open up people were still very wary of coming out and getting their hair so it was difficult building and maintaining my clientele and building a relationship with clients.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
With two years of being in the hair industry, I have falling in love with curly hair and decided to pursue my passion and specialize in Deva cuts. I love to shape and style all curl types. The curly hair cutting techniques (which is cutting curls where they live) will enhance your natural curl pattern from different hair textures and densities. In my chair, you can expect me to make you want to embrace your curls! I also love to highlight and color hair! What I’m most proud of is getting to educate my clients on how to care for their hair while at home. My bubbly personality and positive energy will make your appointments amazing!
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My recommendation is to be open to new opportunities and engage with other people through any outlet you can. Engage with people who you think are great at what they do through social media. I found that people are excited and willing to show things about their work or business if you show interest and give them the time to speak about it.
