Rising Stars: Meet Angela Shockley of Winston Salem, Nc

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Shockley

Hi Angela, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was taught the upholstery skill set by my late aunt who raised me, Jacqueline Shockley. When moving from my hometown of Memphis, TN to Winston Salem, NC in 2011 I embraced my passion of upholstery by acquiring beautiful pieces from the local thrift and antique stores as a hobby. After exiting my corporate career in 2018 I decided to focus on my passion and love of furniture and design. In 2021 AShock Designs opened its first location in Winston Salem, NC where they offer upholstery services, custom furniture, and custom cushions.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, the challenges that I endeavored were getting my name and brand out as 80% of my clients do not reside in North Carolina. By my brand being so out the box and bold it’s hard to persuade traditional mindsets, but I’m always open to a good challenge.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a creative designer that specializes in upholstery custom furniture. I am known for mixing patterns and my antique furniture redesigning. I am most proud of a sofa I reupholstered for Evan Reid of Raleigh, which was featured at the antique design center during high point market in 2022! What sets me apart from others is my ability to mix playful patterns and vivid colors to antique furnishings.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I pay homage to my late aunt, Jacqueline Shockley who introduced me and taught me how to upholster furniture. My dad, Michael Shockley who is my silent business partner taught me how to connect and use fashion as an inspiration for my furniture. Lastly I want to thank my cheerleaders and support system, Colby Midgett (Premier Flowers, Memphis, TN), Ingurr Bates, and Saudia Sekandari (Moroccan Touch Day Spa), along with the host of family and friends!
