Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica Betancourt
Hi Angelica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m Angélica, a hardworking and ambitious woman, proudly from Sincelejo, Colombia, and a mother of two. I arrived in Raleigh in March 2023 with the dream of building a better future for my family. Like many immigrants, I came to this country hoping to achieve my dreams, but I also believe that success only has meaning when it is shared. Shortly after arriving, I realized that there weren’t many options for Colombian fast food. At the same time, my daughter was diagnosed with a condition that made me rethink everything. I needed a job that would allow me to be present for her, and that’s how this project was born. What started as a necessity quickly turned into a passion and a way to bring a little piece of Colombia to those who, like me, miss their homeland. From the very first weekend I started promoting our salchipapas, the response was incredible. We haven’t only won over Colombian customers but have also shared our culture with people from many different backgrounds.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been an easy road. It has been a journey full of lessons, challenges, and moments when I’ve questioned whether I was on the right path. Entrepreneurship is always challenging, but doing it in a new country, without a strong support system nearby, and while raising two children, has been a true test of resilience and faith. However, every obstacle has come with a lesson. I’ve learned that success is not just about talent or effort, but about perseverance. In difficult times, faith and determination can make the difference between giving up and pushing forward. Most importantly, I’ve realized that we are not alone; the community we’ve built around this business has been an essential pillar in this journey. Looking back, I see sacrifices, but I also see growth, gratitude, and the confirmation that everything is worth it when done with love.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I 1. What is your business? My business is a salchipapas (Colombian fast food) restaurant in Raleigh, but it means so much more than that. It’s a little piece of our homeland on every plate, a place where every bite transports us back to the flavors and memories of home. We offer not just food, but a space where the Latino community can feel like they belong. 2. What is the importance of your business and how does it help the Latino community? This business is a place where the Latino community can reconnect with their roots and feel proud of their culture. It’s important because in a country where we sometimes feel like we’ve left so much behind, here they can find a bit of that warmth they miss and share experiences. It helps us unite, remember, and celebrate who we are.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am a hardworking, resilient, and loving woman. I have always dreamed big, and I don’t just imagine things—I make them happen. I love serving others because I understand that life is not just about me; we are here to help, to share, and to make a difference through the blessings we’ve been given. For me, this business is not just about selling food—it’s a way to connect with people, to remind them that dreams are possible, and to show that when something is done with faith and love, it becomes a gift to others. Every dish I prepare carries my story, my effort, and my hope that those who taste it will not only enjoy the flavor but also feel the love and dedication behind it. **
