Rising Stars: Meet April Whiting

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Whiting.

Hi April, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my career as a designer when I was about 11 years old; I taught myself how to use a sewing machine and haven’t looked back since. Since that time, I have been classically trained in university-graduating from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro with honors- and have had the pleasure of working across multiple categories in the design industry including top of the bed, bridal, and global apparel brands.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not been smooth, of course, but has provided perspective and growth as I continue to progress in my field. One obstacle in creating custom-designed apparel is finding your market and really tapping into it.

This is something I still deal with in my business today. However, publications like this help spread the small business news and put creators like me in a position to meet and interact with their target audience.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in made-to-measure designer ready-to-wear and formal garments for the dressers that aren’t afraid to make a statement. I am most known for my unique jumpsuit designs and construction technique. I pride myself on crafting jumpsuits that highlight various figures and make the wearer feel powerful and capable.

I believe my dedication to slow fashion and recycling set me apart in the apparel industry. I would like to revolutionize the way consumers view clothes and fashion in the global scheme and exemplify how quality craftsmanship and supporting local businesses play a part in it.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
The ‘On Purpose’ podcast by Jay Shetty and ‘Social Proof Podcast’ by David Shands has been my favorite podcasts to listen to and watch. They give great insight for the entrepreneur, and those constantly growing and evolving. I find it is a wonderful way to start the day and get into a focused creative space.
