Today we’d like to introduce you to Ariel Evans.
Hi Ariel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My first stand up comedy performance was in the cafeteria (not even the main one) of the University of Rochester. I was in my junior year of college and randomly decided to try stand up comedy. My first performance was rough – when my friends weren’t fake laughing you could hear the sound of the panini maker in the back. Even though nothing went as planned – I was hooked. That same year in the summer, I performed at my first real open mic at a comedy club in Seattle (my hometown). The open mic was at a comedy club in Seattle called Giggles, which later became a strip club called Jiggles, and is now back to being a comedy club. Flash forward a few years and now I’m living in NYC working as a comedian and performing all over the country – I’ve been featured on HBO and am the winner of the 2022 “You Look Like” roast battle in Atlanta.
Just like that comedy club in Seattle my path to stand up comedy may have taken some detours but I always find myself back on stage – in my happy place.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges with stand up comedy is vulnerability; vulnerability with yourself, vulnerability with the audience. Just to even step foot on stage you have to open yourself up to judgement (good and bad). Vulnerability is what challenges me and pushes me to be a better comedian – and better person.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a comedy writer and stand up comedian. I’ve performed all over the country. You can check out my special on YouTube (youtube.com/@arieldiamondevans8) called “That’s Not How It Works.” My special examines navigating life as an adult when you don’t how to do it.
I would describe my comedy “social commentary with family baggage.”
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
As a very happy introvert, people are always surprised to hear that I’m a comedian when they first meet me in the wild.
Also, that I used to work for the government…I would tell you but that’s for another day (or happy hour).
