Rising Stars: Meet Brian Michael Fuller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Michael Fuller.

Hi Brian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always felt a strong pull toward music. From the time I was 8 years old, I can remember riding in the back of my parent’s mint green Ford Thunderbird singing along with the hit songs of the day on the radio. Almost everything else in my childhood is a blur, but I have very vivid memories of things that involved the music I loved.

Like most musicians, my parents would buy me random musical instruments when I was a kid for Christmas. I specifically remember getting an old Sears drum kit called the “Golden Beat”. I also got a Casio keyboard one year. Those instruments changed my life!! There was something amazing about them. The potential to unlock new ideas and unheard melodies… I was hooked at an early age. Although I wouldn’t;t take formal music lessons until my late high school years, I was always experimenting with things.

Not to mention, if my memory serves me, I was an extremely fly rapper in middle school! “B-ski”… oh the memories, lol. I would use my mom and dad’s analog answering machine in tandem with a cassette recorder to make my own DIY multi-track recordings. One day I hope I can find those old tapes… I’m sure they were terrible but highly innovative.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It was extremely smooth. One day I woke up, everyone around me realized how awesome I was, and then I became a millionaire overnight. The entire process took about two weeks. Sometimes I wonder why everyone doesn’t do it. It’s so easy. Actually, none of that’s true. My road to being a working self-employed artist has taken about 30 years of my life, and I feel like I’m just finally figuring it out. The truth is that life is extremely complex. Everyone’s path is unique and different, but we all share similar experiences.

Finding yourself, mining your dreams, and managing your societal contributions is difficult. It takes a really long time to settle into who you really are. While it is never easy, it’s always worth it. I think we are all on an ever-evolving journey of reaching our potential. I think the best thing that I ever did for my music career, was to get a decent day job, focus on loving and supporting my family, and then develop a solid business plan of attack to build my dream job. If you’re focused and disciplined, you can accomplish a lot of things in 5-10 years.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Professionally, I am extremely passionate about two things. Composing music and inspiring other creatives. In addition to writing music for TV shows, I love to coach and mentor other artists, musicians, and creatives to become all that they can be. One of the reasons I love TV music is that I am simultaneously creating cool art and satisfying customers at the same time. It is really more of a “service” industry. My clients need music to help tell their stories and sell their products, and I supply them with that. In a sense, creating my art is motivated by helping others achieve their goals.

My most proud musical accomplishment, besides playing Kazoo with Weird Al and the King of Kazoos, Rick Hubbard, in Cincinnati, Ohio for Oktoberfest… is having my music used twice in Super Bowl 54 on CBS. It was cool when I found out that some tracks of mine, co-written with my buddy Stevie Benz, were heard by over 96 million people all at once! I love having my music in NFL games because I love watching football. So it’s always fun for my family and me when we hear “daddy’s” songs playing. A close second, is my having my music used in A&E’s Emmy Award Winning “Born This Way”.

The funniest placement I ever got was for a Halloween promo spot for a new Sponge Bob Movie on Nickelodeon. It was spooktacular!

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the diversity! There are so many different people from so many different places. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and learn about new cultures. It really is a melting pot of sorts. I live in Chapel Hill currently, and it’s a great place to raise kids.

Lots of sports and fun things to do. The weather is really well balanced too. All 4 seasons! My least favorite thing is that it seems no one really knows how to drive.
