Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Diver.
Hi Bryan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Tristan McGee, Aaron Allred, and I started the Jonah Project in 2016. None of us were in a band we could really sink our teeth into at the time, so we were really ready to dive in and make it everything it could be. We hit the ground running with a four-track self-titled EP.
Originally, that was going to be all we did but we discovered that we were onto something. We started writing and recording and didn’t stop. We really love the music we make and are proud to say we have put out 36 songs over the last 6 years, all of which are available on all listening platforms.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Hahaha, that is an interesting question. You could say our struggle has been to break out into the mainstream, but that wouldn’t be honest. I think as a band we ultimately make music for ourselves because we love it. We make the music that we wish other people would make.
One struggle is the fact that 2/3 of our band are dads of small children, which makes writing, recording, and playing shows increasingly more difficult. That said, it just pushes us to be more grateful for when we can carve out time to play music together.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The Jonah Project is a musical band of buds. We write, record, and produce all of our own music. We are known for retelling stories in a new light to the theme of indie (sometimes emo) music. We are most proud of our unique style and the fact that we are a bit of a hidden gem because it means the people who get our music really get it, and the people who don’t, don’t.
Our sound is influenced by bands and artists like La Dispute, Sufjan Stevens, Microwave, The Band Camino, Old Brier, American Baseball, Explosions in the Sky, Reliant K, Manchester Orchestra, O’brother, and more. This means that our sound is hard to pin down, which we are also very proud of.
What matters most to you?
Excellence. Excellence and what motivates it are what separate the noteworthy from the mediocre. I want to be noteworthy, not for the sake of fame or financial gain but because that is the best use of my time.
