Rising Stars: Meet Dakota Nyman of North Raleigh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dakota Nyman

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Dakota Nyman. My musical career started like many others’ in the middle school band. In high school, I made my way into the prestigious high school program at UNCSA. Here, I was able to study alongside graduate and undergraduate students, learning at a much more rapid pace than others at my level. After graduating high school, I started my own two-piece band, Funky Dogma, in Beaufort, NC. We toured Carteret County for 3 years until my bandmate, Jimbo Rahill, had his untimely passing. Since then, I relocated to the capital of North Carolina, to explore my music career even further. Since then, I have founded Table Two, with co-musicians Kendrick Williams, and Herb Powell. We have worked many great musicians, and we continue to reach for bigger and better things every day!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have had struggles in my career, with having to separate myself from certain groups/projects. Having lost band members for various reasons. I have learned many lessons along the way, about music, business, and working with people. Ultimately the road gets smoother everyday, but I don’t know that it will ever be perfectly smooth.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So I’m a saxophonist who specializes on tenor saxophone performing classic R&B and other jazz-inspired genres. I feel my greatest talent as a musician is my adaptability to many different styles of music, even styles that don’t traditionally incorporate saxophone. I have performed with genres from country and Bluegrass, to modern classical projects, to even a post-punk alternative.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I have gotten too caught up in the details many times. I do my best to remember to take a step back sometimes to look at the big picture. It makes things much clearer for me.
