Rising Stars: Meet DuPont Brass

Today we’d like to introduce you to DuPont Brass. Them and their team share their story with us below:

DuPont Brass originally started as a busking brass band that played at the metro stops during the Christmas season for extra money. After one great season, we decided to continue to busk year-round to help pay for our tuition and college expenses (which we were able to do thanks to an incredible patron who noticed us on the street).

Busking also landed us many private gigs and eventually the opportunity to record our very own album. This sparked the idea of becoming an actual group that performed beyond private events. Through the years, we slowly became more popular within the city as we developed our sound. By 2019, we were releasing strictly original music that combined genres like R&B, Hip-Hop, and Jazz. In 2020, we released our latest project “Music Education”.

Though it was released at the height of the pandemic, the album was well received and put us in a position to put together our first tour. It took some time due to COVID-19, but we’re finally able to kick off the Music Education Tour now which brings us to Raleigh, NC. We are also performing in ATL, Richmond, Baltimore, and of course, D.C.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No, the road has not always been smooth. With a group so big (started as five and grew to ten), it can be hard navigating everyone’s individual lives while keeping the group’s momentum up.

From job switches to relocating to different states, something is always changing with someone in the band. At first, it was extremely hard, but we’ve learned to leverage each other to keep the ball rolling.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We specialize in a style of music we call Eclectic Soul. This music encapsulates multiple genres and combines them into one, with soul music being the root. No matter what we do, it’s going to be soulful.

As a Trumpeter and MC for the group, I’m most proud of how we’ve never been afraid to do whatever inspires us. None of the work we’ve released sounds the same because we are always moving forward. I believe that’s what sets us apart.

What are your plans for the future?
We want to take the music education tour and build on that. It would be awesome if we could take this show to the Midwest and West Coast. We also are working on our next album. It’s sounding really amazing so far.
