Rising Stars: Meet Emily Person of Goldsboro, NC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Person

Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been known as the “picture-taker friend”! Even in high school, my friends would ask me to send them the pictures I had taken. 4 years ago, my cousin had her 3rd child and I took some photos of their family. I made the comment then that I would really love to do this as my job but just didn’t know how to make it happen.

A few months later, my Fiance at the time – now husband, encouraged me to go for it. I created my business and invested very quickly in education and equipment. Now, 3 years in, I have invested in my business and am seeing the growth and the results of a dream I’ve had for a long time. I am very thankful that this is the path the Lord has put me on and is without a doubt what I was made to do. I not only want to use my talent as a way to preserve memories but also a way to share my faith with those around me .

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road. There are a lot of photographers out there and it can be hard to find footing, especially in the beginning. The first year was the hardest. Even though I had invested in education, I hadn’t mastered my editing style and still struggled with posing and finding lighting. Being a photographer also comes with a lot of working alone which leads to comparison and imposter syndrome a lot of days. As a Christian, one of the biggest things that has helped me is to stay focused on my worth in who God says I am, not what I am feeling. Placing it all in the Lord’s hands takes a lot of the pressure off me to succeed, which allows room for creativity, excitement, and a genuine love for my job. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of time, education, and work have been put into my success but working through a lot of the comparison is strongly related to my faith.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a wedding photographer but I also photograph families, newborns, and seniors. I am known for being a true-to-life color editor with a mixture of posed and real-life photos. One thing that sets me apart from others is the experience that I offer my couples. When a couple books with me, they are getting more than a photographer on their wedding day. All of my packages include a second photographer, which is vital in my process to ensure that all of the special moments throughout their wedding day are captured. I also include touch points throughout the planning process that allows them space and freedom to ask questions, opinions, and more than just photos. When a couple books with EPP, they are hiring a photographer that is invested in their marriage, not just their wedding day.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was always very bubbly and outgoing! I could make a friend anywhere and loved life. I didn’t really care what I was doing as long as I was in the middle of the party with the people that I loved. Now, I get to be in the middle of all the parties with couples that turn into friends. In high school, I was known as the friend who took pictures and always volunteered to take other pictures. I did a few photo shoots for friends too. I always wanted to be a photographer but didn’t really know how to make that a reality. I am so thankful my husband pushed me to do it!
