Today we’d like to introduce you to Finsta Of Finsta Bundy.
Hi Finsta, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
First off, I am Finsta of the group Finsta Bundy which include myself, Bundy and our dj, DJ Primetime. I started out in Bushwick, Brooklyn. My first single was released in 1992 under a label called CRACD Records. It was ran by Gucci Man and his partner Chuck. At that point I was a solo artist and Bundy was my DJ. Eventually Bundy became my rhyme partner and we became Finsta & Bundy but later drop the “&” and was then known as just Finsta Bundy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I can’t say it was a smooth or a hard road because if anything the journey was and is a lesson. If I had to say I struggled with anything, I’d say it was trying to manage all the positions I would have to play. It’s very hard to think as a creative while having to also manage all the particulars that come with being and managing an artist.
The great part is not having to rely on anyone else to bring a vision into fruition. I had to have a way to record, create visuals, get the music to the masses, get physical product, distribute product, create resources and learn to do it in cohesion with each other. I can’t say I mastered it but I can say I have an understanding of what I need to do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m most known for being a part of Finsta Bundy. A lot of people thought Bundy was my last name but I’m glad to say I’ve got to do some dope things with my brothers Bundy & Primetime. Since officially becoming Finsta Bundy, we’ve released a gang of singles and even collaborated with a few international artists like DJ Krush from Japan, I’ve worked with Manuel Bundy and Dean Cuba from New Zealand, my peoples Fraction out of Canada and most recently the Recluse Crew out of Finland just to name a few..
As far as what I do, I’d just say I do a lot. I dj, rap, produce music, film and edit content, Currently my focus is my show/channel Hip Hop, Beats & Thangs which I stream on Mixcloud, YouTube and Twitch. the channel includes a couple shows such as Finding Raleigh, Soulfull Earth and a few others. I’m most proud of the ability I’ve been given to execute on a dream.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I don’t have particular advice on the mentor tip because I’ve never had anyone that I could say
were a mentor to me. What I would say as far as networking is know what you need. I had to be and still am only concerned with what my sound and style is. The industry standard has never been a focus of mine. There’s a lot of made up artists, meaning you perform what’s given versus someone who creates everything from scratch. Do what you truly feel and be you.
It’s easy to fake the funk but when you have a dream, it’s unique to who you are, do that. It’s been a long time since artist development was a thing so you have to draw off inspirations and build your own style. If someone sees ways in which they can help, keep all control and don’t just settle for money as the end all.
In other words, don’t get caught up in the hype. It’s easy to fall to energy vampires. It’s easier to do things on your own and build true collaborations with people who can see and wanna help execute your vision and vice versa because you may see how you can help someone else’s vision.
