Rising Stars: Meet Jay Coachman of North Carolina (Raleigh/Durham, Greenville and Charlotte)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Coachman.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Joshua “Jay,” Coachman, CEO of Coachman Creations. I was born and raised in North Carolina. I have been drawing and creating artwork before I could talk. I consider Art as my first language. My parents always watered my passion & creativity. In early childhood, I was mostly in Hillsborough until I moved to Oxford when I was 10. During my upbringing, I was always into art and sports. After graduating Highschool, I went to college at East Carolina University, where I received my bachelor’s in Fine Arts and a minor in Global Understanding. (2019) During my time in college, I learned who I was as an Artist, Curator, and Entrepreneur, which gave birth to Coachman Creations.

Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but I believe anything you’re putting your all into will always have its bumps. Sometimes it’s as simple as “Life,” the outside world, or ourselves getting in the way. But Your will and drive to power through those obstacles make you a stronger person. Those struggles build the resilience you need to make it in my field.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in Portraiture. It could be paint, pencil, pen & ink, or even printmaking. I love how I can connect with the world through the reflections of others—showing someone how I “see” them and their aura. I’m known for having vibrant color schemes within my work. What sets me apart from others is I can do anything at a high level, from Painting to Producing to Tattooing to Curating, etc. I’m willing to wear every hat needed to get the job done. Having such a wide range of talents allows me to curate events for the community.

What has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Stay Humble, Stay Hungry and Stay True. No matter how high you fly, you have to remember where you started. No matter how far you’ve come, stay consistent in getting better every day. And most importantly, always stay focused on who you are and have intention on what your Art represents.
