Rising Stars: Meet Jennifer Johnston – Chopping

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Johnston – Chopping.

Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up as an equestrian, animal care and welfare was top priority for me. When I settled in North Carolina to raise my family I noticed the dire need for animal advocates in Moore County.

It was obvious to me that the shelter situation was too big to ignore. In 2014 I created a network of fosters and began pulling dogs from our local high-kill shelter. Now in 2022, we have saved over 4,000 dogs and we continue to save as many dogs as we can from euthanasia, providing them a second chance at life and love.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing in animal welfare is smooth. We have struggled with and continue to struggle with the number of dogs needing help. There is an absence of education regarding spaying and neutering, as well as an understanding of epidemics like Heartworm.

We hope that in the future, there will be more resources for towns and cities to aid this problem at capacity shelters and a general lack of compassion for these animals who have no voice.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The work I do with Caring Hearts for Canines includes finding the perfect homes for the dogs we save. When a dog enters our program, every dog is vetted, microchipped, evaluated, and begins a time of decompression to help them adjust. Potential adopters also go through an in-depth approval process to ensure that their home and lifestyle are a match.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I could not do the work I do without my team of volunteers. Volunteers and our donors are the reason we can save the dogs we do. They are a vital part of the process. Volunteers care, feed, socialize, and love the dogs we save on a daily basis. Their dedication is unwavering and I greatly appreciate those who fight this cause with me.
