Rising Stars: Meet Joshua Clark of North Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Clark.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey into photography started in 2018, when I was a 17-year-old freshman in college. It was simple, really — people around me needed a camera, so I got one. What I didn’t expect was how quickly a practical decision would turn into a passion.
I didn’t have formal training. I learned by watching YouTube videos, getting around other photographers, and absorbing everything I could. I wanted to be a sponge. The more I shot, the more I fell in love with it — not just the technical side, but the ability to express art through a lens. That feeling kept pulling me back.
In the early days, I did a lot of free shoots — and honestly, I still do. In the beginning it was tactical, a way to build experience and a portfolio. Now it’s just out of love for the craft. My whole journey has felt less like a series of milestones and more like one continuous act of growth. I never said no to shooting anything, and that willingness to pick up the camera for anything and everything taught me more than any classroom could.
There was a season where life got loud — work, responsibilities, distractions — and people started asking me, “are you still taking pictures?” That question stuck with me. It reminded me that if I truly want to grow this business, I have to protect it from the things that pull my focus away.
Today, I’d describe ClarksFocus Photography the way I’d describe a teenager — there’s real confidence there, but also a deep awareness that there’s still so much more to learn and so many more places to grow. I’ve shot events, weddings, portraits, food, clothing, vehicles — if it catches my eye, I point my camera at it. I came to peace with being a jack of all trades a long time ago.
What keeps me here, at the core of it, is the magic of what a photograph actually does. It freezes time. It calls us back to moments we’d forgotten — to emotions, to people, to versions of ourselves. Photography is a staple of life, and being the person who captures those moments is something I don’t take lightly.
The mission now is bigger than just a photography business. I want to grow ClarksFocus into a full media company. I want to take this as far as it can go — and I truly believe it can go far.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overall It has been a smooth road. I feel I’m the guy that paves the road and also the lone rider on It. So the road is as smooth or as difficult as I make It. There are challenges on the business side that takes adjusting getting used to and determination to understand It.

ClarksFocus Photography is a full-service photography and videography business based in Raleigh, North Carolina, built on one simple idea — focus. The name says it all. When I point my camera at a subject, my entire intention is to showcase their importance, to make them feel seen and to capture them at their best. That philosophy carries through everything I do.

While I’ve photographed just about everything — weddings, food, clothing, vehicles, real estate, commercial work — events and portraits are where I’m most requested, and honestly, where I feel most at home. There’s something special about both. Events are alive, full of energy and unrepeatable moments. Portraits are intimate — it’s just you, me, and the camera, and my job is to bring out something real. I approach both with the same mindset: be present, be intentional, and never miss the moment that matters.

My style is adaptive but always clean and true to life. I don’t believe in over-editing or chasing trends. I want your photos to look like you — the best version of you — not a filtered imitation. Whether I’m shooting a corporate event downtown or a portrait session at golden hour, the standard stays the same.

What sets me apart isn’t just the photography — it’s the experience. From the first conversation to final delivery, I want every client to feel like the most important person in the world. I show up with energy, I communicate clearly, I’m professional on set, and I stay engaged with whoever is in front of my lens. I want the experience of working with ClarksFocus to be so good that it unlocks a passion for the occasion — that you leave feeling excited, seen, and taken care of. Those are the compliments I consistently receive, and they mean more to me than any award.
I’m based in Raleigh but I travel for work — distance has never stopped a good shoot.
