Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Hall Swales.
Hi Julia Hall, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina, and have always had a passion for art and creativity. In 2019, I graduated from Meredith College with a degree in Graphic Design and Studio Arts. During my time there, I focused on watercolor illustration and explored ways to thoughtfully incorporate my artwork into my graphic design projects.
After graduating, I began my career designing wedding stationery and invitation suites at a stationery boutique. That experience sparked a love for stationery design, and weddings and invitation suites remain some of my favorite projects to create.
Today, I work as a Digital Designer at Peter Millar while continuing to pursue illustration and design projects on the weekends. Whether I’m creating watercolor artwork, custom stationery, or branding pieces, I love bringing thoughtful, personal designs to life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my biggest challenges has been balancing my full-time career with pursuing illustration and art on the weekends. Managing creative projects outside of work while maintaining a healthy work-life balance requires strong time management, organization, and the ability to set priorities. Although it can be demanding, I enjoy having the opportunity to create artwork that inspires me outside of my full-time role.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Through J.Hall Designs, I create custom watercolor illustrations, wedding stationery, invitation suites, venue and home portraits, pet portraits, and branding pieces. I love creating meaningful artwork that celebrates life’s special moments and reflects each client’s unique story. More recently, I’ve combined my love of illustration with my passion for needlepoint by designing canvases as a member of Penny Linn’s Collective, allowing me to bring my artwork to a new creative community
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I strive to bring creativity, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail to everything I create. Whether I’m designing a wedding invitation, painting a custom illustration, or developing a brand asset, I believe the best work is both beautiful and meaningful. I value collaboration, enjoy building genuine relationships with clients, and I am committed to creating pieces that feel personal, timeless, and thoughtfully crafted.
