Today we’d like to introduce you to Kasey Smith.
Hi Kasey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It’s been clear from a young age that I belonged in a creative field, but my path to find interior design was not exactly linear. I studied graphic design in college while simultaneously building a photography business, working in corporate user interface design, and freelancing in fine art, stationery, and brand design. The pieces of the puzzle didn’t fully fall into place until my husband and I decided to build out a custom sprinter van to travel in for a year; suddenly I was mapping out floor plans, selecting finishes, and building out spec sheets for the team to build out our dream rig across the country. My first taste of interior design was certainly not standard, but it was enough to get the wheels turning – maybe this was what I was meant to do. I decided to work virtually for a few e-design companies to get a feel for the industry, then made the leap to begin my firm in 2020 after planting roots in Wilmington, North Carolina. Since then, I’ve been streamlining processes and honing my craft, bringing on team members along the way to create Kasey Smith Interiors as you currently know it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No business ownership story is ever smooth sailing. Lessons were learned the hard way a few times (by the way, you should always measure to make sure the sofa will fit around that turn, oh – and triple check the lighting dimensions before sending them off). So much growth has come from experience and I now can foresee potential pain points and resolve them before they ever escalate.

Kasey Smith Interiors is a Wilmington, North Carolina based full-service interior design studio specializing in new construction and large-scale renovations. Heavily inspired by the natural beauty of the eastern coastline, we are dedicated to crafting interiors that feel both elevated and deeply livable. From concept to completion, we guide you through every step – space planning, material selection, custom furnishings, and final styling – with a focus on beauty, functionality, and ease.
Our approach is collaborative and detail-driven, ensuring each project reflects the individuality of our clients while carrying a consistent thread of natural materials and laid back, quiet sophistication. Whether designing a home from the ground up or breathing new life into a historic renovation, we believe great design should feel effortless, inviting, and enduring.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t call it luck so much as the Lord’s hand of provision and guidance in my interior design story. I heard God calling me to start my own firm in 2020, right before Covid made the industry boom. My first big client was a family friend who so kindly trusted me with their beautiful new construction home up north. I have been handed opportunity after opportunity, and it has been so clearly not my own strength as Kasey Smith Interiors continues to grow.
