Today we’d like to introduce you to Keeyen Martin.
Hi Keeyen, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a native of Charlotte, NC, and was born into a very musical family. My family tree really is my foundation.
-My Grandmother, a pianist, and a singer
-My father’s a Pastor, accomplished pianist, and songwriter
-Uncle, Choral Director, organist, and composer
-Mother, a singer
Having these examples, it was inevitable to do music. At 2 years old my Grandmother says I started singing and wouldn’t stop. Needless to say, I truly have yet to stop (laughs), And I don’t intend to. Music and singing have always been things I’ve done naturally and well. I love it. By 5 years old I knew I was destined to sing. Upon entering high school, I knew I was purposed to become a renowned Artist.
Finding my niche and sound in high school were pivotal moments for me. The transition to college was so epic because I was so locked into who I was as an Artist. Attending Morehouse College as a Music Major/ Spanish minor, I performed everywhere all the time. I was fortuned many life-changing opportunities that truly set the tone for my career. Atl has become a second home and a launching pad for me as an Artist.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’d say post-undergrad I felt really lost and unsure if my dreams would manifest. I lived on my best friend’s couch for a little over a year; sometimes eating hotdogs or bologna sandwiches for dinner. In spite of this, I kept believing and reminded myself why I started.
Every time those realizations lifted me. I pushed forward and maintained my journey.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I sing, play the piano, and write songs. My aim is to uplift, encourage, and inspire through music. I hope people are moved and impacted to be the best versions of themselves.
My music is a blend of pop, R&B, and soul.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see the music industry continuing to evolve in a dual virtual and live world. I read the other day that a label just signed its first AI Artist, which is pretty interesting. I hope the live show experience doesn’t dissipate. Also, with the onset of NFTs, it will be interesting to see what’s to come for distributing and making revenue off of music.
