Rising Stars: Meet Lashanda DeBerry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lashanda DeBerry.

Hi Lashanda, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a little girl, I was always intrigued with hair and healthy eating. I asked my mom when I was eight why there wasn’t a drive-thru fast food where we could get a pita sandwich. She told me when I grew up to open one. Lol. My grandmother also played a huge role in my love of herbs. By ten, she had taught me what all the herbs that she needed looked like and how to pick them. While riding, if she saw a field that had the herbs on the side of the highway or wherever we were, she would stop and have me pick them. I learned early to gather the right kind because she always told me whatever I picked, she would boil and drink and if it was the wrong herb, it could kill her. “Thanks grandma I was only ten.” It taught me early to take my herbs seriously. Flash forward, I decided to attend hair school and obtain my cosmetologist license after the death of my father and opened my first salon at the Chapel Hill on Franklin St. at that. I practiced the world of cosmetology and had the privilege to style many local and national celebrities. In 2011 after styling hair for over 20 years, I started having pain in my chest at night and felt a weird feeling every time I’d take a breath.

After six months of visiting the Dr and many tests, I heard the three most feared words in all languages…. “you have cancer”. That is the day my life changed. I tell everyone you never start to live until you have touched deaths door. After my 2nd chemo, I decided to return to my roots. Herbs. I started research and returned to my love of mixing herbs and tinctures to see what worked. I realized as a stylist many of us get cancer, autoimmune diseases, headaches, rashes, ovarian problems and the list goes on and on simply inhaling the chemicals that we do. After much research and trial and error Pür Bella Naturals was born. At the time, I informed all of my clients that I would no longer be able to provide chemical services and referred them to other stylists or inquired of them if they would be willing to go natural. To my surprise, over 70% of them wanted to continue on the journey with me since the natural scene had started to resubmerge. Talk about excited! So I got busy formulating and creating. After much time, trial and error, research, classes, paying $200 and hour to be mentored by the best…. I finally had a full blown product line! But I still was feeling unsure and having to fight against imposter syndrome. (Still do at times) But I knew in my gut it was time for me to close the salon and go full fledge with my line.

My daily prayer would be that my line that I put so much heart and effort and testing into every formulation would get in the hands of someone that stood for clean beauty like I did. God is in the prayer answering business because two weeks before closing my salon to take the leap in my salon walks Mrs. Tabitha Brown herself! : to take the leap in walks Mrs. Tabitha Brown herself! I had the privilege to style Donna (the name she has given her hair) and introduce her to my baby… Hello Curls. : Hello Curls defining mousse. Each month I would order an ingredient until one day I woke up and said today is the day! I went in the lab (kitchen at the time) and created it in 15 min. Wallah, my number one seller was born. Since then, I have closed the salon and hired a small team. We now operate in a separate area from my home daily, I formulate and create and my team packages, labels, handles emails and everything else that comes with a small business. I am grateful to be located in a few local stores Bulldega Durham, Durham Co-op and soon we will be available in Wegmans Grocery. I’m still evolving as businesswoman, mentor and educator and loving every moment of it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been smooth. Especially when Covid hit unlike many businesses that folded my business actually tripled, but unfortunately the world was out of bottles to pack the products in. Some manufactures would not have any for three months. So there was high demand but it took a while to produce. As well as ingredients. Most were out or they took a while to get. But we made it! Other obstacles are learning to find balance with family and self. Also, the fact that business is expanding being sure to learn and adjust as I go and educate myself on the things that are needed to stay legal.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am most proud of the fact that I did not go to a manufacture and have them create the product then just put my label on. But I actually created and formulated each product. Had tested for efficacy and was able to test the performance on each product for a year before fully putting them on the market. I’m proud of the fact that I am also a licensed cosmetologist and aware of what hair needs to thrive and can incorporate this in my formulations.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck. I pray. I strongly believe in blessings and hard work. I honestly don’t think things happen by happenstance but that you simply get what you expect and what you visualize. I actually wake up each morning and will visualize what I would like my day to be like, things I want to see, the attitude Id like to have, even down to the food that I want to eat. We are creators of our own reality, so luck no, but God and my thoughts…… absolutely! If you believe you can’t then you’re absolutely right! I grew up listening to old tapes of Les Brown that one of my moms employees gave her and adopted his thoughts unbeknowingly to myself at a very early age. Thanks Mom! I encourage all if you have a thought or a passion that you think the world needs, to push past the fear and Do It scared!
