Today we’d like to introduce you to Lois Gold.
Lois, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My parents were avid art collectors and so I had an interest in art at a very young age. When I was in graduate school, studying French I started to sculpt at night. I then segued to painting eventually full time. I have worked in
every medium -chalk pastel on paper for about fifteen years and then pivoted, and began to paint and collage on canvas instead. I found the latter more exciting and it continues to be.
I go to my studio every day and time just seems to stop, and I am no longer thinking-just immersed in the physicality of the paint.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The act of painting has been smooth. I do not like the act of selling or self promotion. Years ago, when galleries were more important it was much easier.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am proud of the versatility of my work. I paint in series, -landscapes, trees, fruits, shells, abstracts, collages, and imaginary cities . I maintain my excitement by changing the subjects substrates, and media.
I am known for my sense of color. My process is an intuitive mix of strokes with not only brushes, but fingers as well. I am not afraid to send water across a section of paint resulting in streaks, drips, and splashes, or what I like to call “happy accidents”. Acrylics are layered over coats of beaded gel. This method results in a luminously reflective surface-almost sparkling. I like to scumble light colors over darker ones and I use wonderful handmade papers which I tear and collage. My color choices range from the warm drama of Turner to the pastel colors of Monet.
Painterly surfaces are imbued with a passionate love for the process of painting. Natural and organic forms shine from the paintings.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I love to ballroom dance.
