Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Schofield.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My wife Hope and I have been playing music together in one for another since meeting in our high school marching band in 2000. We have been in bands together through high school and college, church worship leaders and now music teachers and local performers. Our work during the week is focused on teaching private music lessons through Raleigh, Wake Forest, Youngsville, Rolesville and surrounding areas. We perform together as acoustic duo around the Triangle and beyond, also recording and releasing original music. We love to incorporate our passion for writing and performing music into private lessons.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Working in music is incredibly rewarding, but it is not without its struggles. I often use the common phrase “Music is the universal language”. This a wonderful truth. Music speaks to culture, age, emotion, joy and pain; every aspect of the human experience. As will all communication, music requires patience, persistence and grace. In order for us to teach our students, we have to work to connect with each of our students as individuals. There is no “one size fits all” learning or teaching style. On the performance and artistry side, it can be difficult to find performance opportunities. It is even more difficult to get your music heard. This requires so much patience and persistence. Our love of the music keeps us going!
Perhaps the greatest challenge has been growing together as a married couple while striving to succeed as musicians and teachers. The great joy is in overcoming those challenges together. We make each other better as teachers, performers, artists and communicators. I can’t imagine doing any of this without Hope.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We teach private music lessons to students of all ages. We offer lessons in piano, voice, guitar, bass, drums and ukulele.
We perform as an acoustic duo around the Triangle and beyond. We also write, record and release our own original music.
We believe that music makes our lives better and we try to bring that vibe with us to our lessons and performances. I think we bring happiness to people through music. I think this is made extra special because we are married couple working together.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The arts in general or so important. Music, dance, theater, painting, drawing, sculpting, etc all provide people with an outlet for self-expression and community. The need for those things will never go away. Our little corner of that world is vital. While we do teach music, music itself teaches students patience, persistence and how to “lean in” when things aren’t always easy and immediate. Music is also freedom from screens and the noise of the world.
From a business perspective, the Triangle is growing rapidly, bringing more students to the area. I see lots of musicians and studios offering lessons. There is no shortage of students.
The business of live music and releasing original music is a different story. As long as there are venues and audiences that value real people playing and creating music, there will be work for those of willing to put in the time to connect with those audiences.
