Rising Stars: Meet Maddie Javed

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maddie Javed.

Hi Maddie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Six years ago, we moved to North Carolina; as we lived in North Carolina, we realized the lack of Mediterranean food. You would have to drive miles in a search of some Mediterranean food. Since we had a cooking background, we decided to open one up a food truck that sells Mediterranean food. When we opened the food truck, we started to realize the majority of locals don’t know much about Mediterranean cuisine. On the other hand, more diversified states like New York, New Jersey, Florida are already enjoying Mediterranean halal food. So, the first year of 2021, we spent most of the time educating people about the food. We tried advertising, educate others. At first, people were scared about trying the food out, but as the time passed, word to mouth spread. More and more people started finding out. We started getting a lot of attention and love from our customers, and we started collecting a lot of reviews. Although we are new to the business, our supportive customers have made us the best truck in Asheboro and surrounding areas.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The main obstacle was us having to quit our full-time jobs while maintaining a household alongside with a food truck for a small food truck in a small town. Not to mention Covid was another hurdle; we tried local, private, corporate events and received good feedback, but it was not enough to run the business. Sometimes we even spent weeks waiting for customers. It’s been quite an adventure handling a new business in a small town.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My husband used to drive the cab for 16 years in NYC. Then he used to be a hotel manager in Greensboro. As I spent most of the time being a housewife, I have been cooking all my life and learning from my grandma. Me and my husband have 2 years of experience working as chefs in a restaurant.
