Rising Stars: Meet Matthias Handrich of South Durham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthias Handrich

Hi Matthias, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am one of 7 brothers from a small Amish and Menonite town in Northern Michigan. A few years back one of my brothers got interested in 3D printing and inspired me to get my own printer. I did it as a hobby for 5 years and found a passion to help others learn how to use 3D printers as well, In August of 2022 I started a Google business page on a whim. From there I started getting a few jobs here and there incuding Durham Public Schools, who reached out about a service and repair contract for their 3D printers. Since then, I have been able to work with a vast array of individuals and businesses to create 3D printed parts and as well as repair 3D printers that individuals and businesses own. I am a father of 7 children so this passion turned career has been wonderful in addition to my full time job as a facilities manager at my church, King’s Park. I love the work I do so much and I am so thankful that my small busniess is doing well.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have had to learn a lot about filing taxes for businesses and business insurance. Many behind the scenes necessities that are vital to a thriving small business that I had to teach myself quickly. I have also improved my 3D modeling skills so that I can be more efficient when helping my customers.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have worked with many entrepeneurs and love helping them see their vision come to life. I love working with clients that have a plastic part that they can no longer buy or find and then able to make an exact 3d model of that piece and printing it for them. Customers are always so amazed at how accurate I can be with recreating the parts. Also I have a fairly exstensive knowledge of the repair side and love helping others fix there printers and teaching them how to better use there 3D printer. I am probably most proud of the 2 service contracts that I have obtained with Durham Public Schools and Wake County Schools.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Force yourself to learn the behind the scenes things like bookkeeping and taxes. Keep a good record of everything that you do for your business so that when you need to file taxes you have a good record to look back on. Makes it easier for yourself to not have to play catchup.
