Rising Stars: Meet Mayra Salonga Davis of Cary North Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Salonga Davis.

Hi Mayra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to the US in 2018 and have since proven it is a nation of opportunity. Regarding US regulations, they don’t accept licenses from outside the country. I struggled at first with returning to the same courses I had previously completed in Hong Kong. I wasted no time starting my own business and opening my solo clinic after receiving my degree and passing my board exam in a year. I am confident and wired to run a solo business since God gave me the vision with my 15 years of aesthetic experience in the industry. As God has been with me throughout my path and continues to do so, the business is doing incredibly well. I’m enthusiastic about what I do.

In one of the US classes I attended here, we were instructed to “discover our specialty.” whether it be a facial, a waxing procedure, an eye enhancement, or a body treatment. From what I’ve learned in Hong Kong, that is entirely different. Estheticians are known as beauty therapists. Additionally, we receive training in all esthetic procedures, including massages and nails. I discovered in the US that massage and nails require separate licenses. I am an expert in beauty and aesthetic procedures. Since I enjoy multitasking, I love to do all treatments. That’s why I’m proud of keeping up my 5-star reviews. I blend my treatments in traditional western and Asian holistic approach styles. The main products I’m using are famous, clinically proven, and effective by the Korean beauty brand. One of my lifting treatments is the LPG machine from France, Get Glowing Chemical to peel from South Africa. This HydraGlow machine inspired Hydrafacial(American treatment) Holistic treatments (meditational) that I attended training in the UK. That’s what makes me different from others.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Since I was new in town, I didn’t know anyone except my family and my husband’s family, who didn’t live in the area. So I started my clinic in Aug 2019 with zero clientele. I started getting clients by attending Filipino gathering groups, meet-up business events in our area and passing my name cards to people I met outside. There are a lot of different flat forms to market my business, but it’s costly. I start with google marketing for $100 a month. Sometimes I only got 1 client a week, and I don’t drive that time. So I still need to get Uber. Sometimes I only have 1 client in a day and take Uber to get there and end up client canceled or a show. And I don’t charge cancellations or no-shows. I also came to the point of giving up. To support my business, I also work part-time at the restaurant as a receptionist at night so that I can open my clinic in the daytime.

Long after, I went to target store because it pays more and time is more flexible. I will start getting an entire book by March 2020. Unfortunately, COVID hits, and I remember we were forced to close in mid-March. That is devastating, scary, and sad! And April of that year, Sola announced that they were still charging us our rent. 5 other businesses closed then. And Because some of my clients call me, that keeps me motivated to continue paying my rent, and we will start opening by July 2020. Business is slow, and it starts to pick up by Nov 2020. I stopped working for Target store in Oct 2021 as I’m getting fully booked. As of now, I’m continuing happily serve clients.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I set my standard to work at high-end places. I started at commercial spas, 5 stars hotels to Med spa back in Hong Kong. With my experiences from different settings and concepts, I created my techniques and put them all together. And keep myself up to date by taking classes. Right now, I also took a class for Esthetic Instructor. It’s time to share my knowledge and experience.

What do you think about luck?
I grew up with parents who valued family and a strong faith in God. as my parents frequently state. (Matthew 6:33) “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” I believe God gives luck. And I grew up always trying my best to put HIM priority. Before I do anything, I always pray and give God thanks. And I always thank HIM for how he gave me a blessing in life. Believe it or not, that’s my secret weapon for getting 5-star reviews.
