Rising Stars: Meet Megan Huggins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Huggins.

Hi Megan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
So I call my art, broken is beautiful because I was introduced to it when I was broken. Through personal triumphs, I was able to come back to life better than I had before, but it took putting together cut pieces of my soul, one by one, and it was tedious work. I don’t always come out as expected or wanted based on the small steps I take, but I always end up more beautiful than before. Each of my pieces are like my struggles in life, and in the end, they take on a soul of their own any new way of looking at the world.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been smooth at times. I’m very much a self-taught artist. Besides the first person that showed me how to do a mosaic, I feel like it is a cutthroat world in the Art industry. Not many people are willing to give me advice to further my artist career. The only support I really get us through a good network of friends and family.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What sets me apart from other mosaic artists is that I include resin into my pieces. Resin just takes it to a whole new level and actually makes my art much stronger than you would expect in a glass piece. I specialize probably in cats. A portrait of my own cat was one of my first 8“ x 10“ pieces, I just love the little fluffballs so much. But really I can do anything anybody asks me to if they give me a picture. I look at my artwork as if I’m coloring. I loved coloring as a kid, and now I can do it but instead of crayons are used cut pieces of stained glass. And I love jigsaw puzzles, and I can do that with my glass it’s all about finding the right piece to fit.

What makes you happy?
Oh, this is a hard question to answer because I struggle with mental health issues. But I would say that traveling makes me happy. I love looking at the world in a new pair of sunglasses. I love living a life that’s different from my day to day habits. I do like my habits though. I feel like my most authentic self when I travel. And I also travel with friends and family that I don’t always get to spend time with, so that’s really good for me. It’s hard to find good people to surround yourself with.
