Rising Stars: Meet Nancy Parrish of Danville Virginia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Parrish.

Hi nancy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Nancy Parrish Interiors 12 years ago in Charlotte, North Carolina, driven by a love of interiors and a belief that homes should feel personal, layered, and lived in. In the early years, I focused primarily on residential design, building the business slowly and intentionally through referrals and long-term client relationships. Over time, my work evolved into a full-service interior design practice, allowing me to collaborate closely with homeowners to create spaces rooted in color, comfort, and thoughtful detail.

As the business grew, so did my desire to explore design beyond traditional client work. I’ve always been drawn to the tactile side of interiors—furniture, art, textiles, and the way color can completely transform a space. After more than a decade in Charlotte, I felt it was the right moment for a change, both personally and professionally. Relocating to Danville, Virginia offered the opportunity to reimagine how I wanted the business to function and to build something more community-centered.

That move led to the opening of Hue by Nancy Parrish Interiors, a retail and design studio that serves as an extension of my design philosophy. Hue is a curated space where clients and visitors can experience my aesthetic firsthand, from furniture and lighting to art, décor, and color-forward pieces. It allows me to share design in a more accessible way, whether someone is redesigning an entire home or simply looking for inspiration. Today, I continue to offer full-service interior design through Nancy Parrish Interiors while growing Hue as a creative hub—one that blends retail, design services, and a love for collected, meaningful spaces. The journey has been one of steady growth, creative evolution, and learning to trust change, and I’m excited about what this next chapter holds.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Looking back, the road has been less about obstacles and more about learning and evolution. Every stage of building the business brought its own lessons, from finding my voice as a designer to understanding how to run a business in a way that felt aligned and sustainable. Those early years required patience and trust—trust in the work, in the relationships being built, and in the idea that steady growth was just as valuable as fast growth.

Relocating after 12 years in Charlotte was a pivotal moment. Leaving behind familiarity was challenging, but it created space to reflect on what I truly wanted the next phase to look like. Opening Hue by Nancy Parrish Interiors was a direct result of that reflection. It pushed me creatively and professionally, but it also reaffirmed my belief in the importance of connection, storytelling, and creating spaces—both homes and retail environments—that feel welcoming and personal.

The challenges along the way helped clarify my values and sharpen my vision. They taught me to embrace change, stay open to possibility, and appreciate the process as much as the outcome. In many ways, the journey has been about growing alongside the business, and I’m grateful for every step that led me here.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At the core of my work is creating interiors that feel layered, personal, and truly livable. Through Nancy Parrish Interiors, I specialize in full-service residential and commercial interior design, guiding clients from concept through completion. My approach is highly collaborative, focusing on how people experience a space—whether it’s a home, office, or retail environment—and translating that into interiors that feel intentional, functional, and expressive. Color plays a central role in my work, along with an emphasis on texture, craftsmanship, and collected pieces that tell a story.

Over the years, it’s been rewarding to see the work recognized in publications such as Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Southern Living, Veranda, House Beautiful, The Washington Post, The Spruce, and Living Etc. While the press is exciting, what I’m most proud of are the relationships I’ve built with clients—many of whom have returned for multiple projects across different phases of life. What sets my work apart is the balance between creativity and approachability: I aim to design spaces that feel elevated without being precious, expressive yet comfortable, and truly reflective of the people and purpose behind them.

How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happiest is creating spaces that spark joy and connection—both in my work and in everyday life. I love seeing a room come together in a way that feels meaningful, where color, texture, and design choices reflect the people who inhabit it. Beyond design, I find happiness in moments of creativity, whether that’s discovering a unique piece to complete a space, experimenting with new color combinations, or simply gathering with family and friends in a home that feels welcoming.

I also find joy in the process itself—the relationships built with clients, collaborators, and the local community, and the small wins that come from problem-solving and seeing ideas come to life. For me, happiness comes from balance: mixing work I love with the personal connections and experiences that make life feel full and inspired.
