Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Martin.
Hi Patricia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began as a scenic artist in theater, where storytelling through space, texture, and atmosphere first shaped my work. Raised in an art-centered family—my father was a cartoonist—I was encouraged early on to trust my creative instincts. After years of building sets and large-scale installations for theater and corporate events, with clients such as Toyota, Hard Rock Cafe, the American Cancer Society, and the International Olympic Committee. I eventually returned to painting and drawing to pursue more intimate, personal work. Today, I am a fine artist specializing in portraiture, creating expressive portraits of people and animals, as well as murals that live in public and private spaces throughout the South.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My path has not been entirely smooth. After building a successful business in set and event fabrication, I experienced a significant setback that ultimately led to the loss of that business. When the economic downturn of 2008 hit, I stepped away from art for a period and worked in customer service doing what I needed to do to stay afloat. Those years reshaped my relationship with my work and clarified what mattered most to me creatively. Eventually, I made the decision to return to art full time, starting with graphic design and later recommitting myself to painting and drawing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in painting living things, including people, animals, and nature. In my work, I strive to capture light, presence, and personality rather than focusing solely on likeness. I’m most proud of creating paintings that convey a sense of life and energy, allowing the subject’s inner character to emerge through the process. My approach balances observation and intuition, resulting in work that feel alive and resonant.
What does success mean to you?
I define success as building a sustainable livelihood that provides for my needs while giving me the freedom to experience the world, stay curious, and continue growing and refining my skills.
