Today we’d like to introduce you to Rex Vick, Jr.
Rex, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Rex Vick, Jr. is President and CEO of the Windjam Companies. Windjam is an umbrella for RBV Investments and the Windjam Development Group (our land acquisition and development entities), Sage Built (our luxury homebuilding company), and Windjam Properties (our sales and marketing arm – a licensed real estate agency).
Rex graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School in 1993 with an emphasis in real estate, followed by pursuit of an advanced degree in mortgage banking in College Park, Maryland. Obtaining his real estate broker’s license in 1991, before graduating from UNC, promoted his interest in real estate. He immediately entered the world of financing post-graduation, filling executive positions in three large national banks in North Carolina in his first five years out of school, as well as starting a regional mortgage banking firm in multiple states.
Rex’s father, Rex Vick, Sr., is Windjam’s Chairman. Rex, Sr. is one of the original founders of Republic Mortgage Insurance Company based in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He co-founded the company in 1972, and it grew to become the nation’s fifth-largest independent mortgage guaranty group in the nation.
Together with Rex Sr.’s leadership and financial contacts throughout the Southeast, which are invaluable to the companies’ long-term growth, Rex Jr.’s extensive financial network and intimate knowledge of the construction industry is the foundation for Windjam’s strong reputation in land development, luxury home building and real estate sales.
Rex Vick, Jr. has assembled a team of highly qualified people with the depth of experience and expertise to meet any challenge in the market, whether it be in approaching land development and guiding stewardship of our properties and communities, in ensuring customer satisfaction in innovative custom home building or in maximizing value with up to date guidance in listing and sales for our real estate clients.
One of our hallmark communities, our “gem,” is The Hamptons Summit. With lots developed by Windjam Development luxury homes built exclusively by Sage Built and also exclusively marketed by Windjam Properties, this premier community is located in Chatham County and represents the pinnacle of fine living. With sprawling homesites ranging from one to nearly seven acres, The Summit offers the canvas for crafting a bespoke dream estate.
The community sits atop Burnette Mountain, where owners can enjoy sweeping vistas of Chatham County while also enjoying the tranquil embrace of nature on secluded, wooded homesites. The Summit offers state-of-the-art fiber optics for seamless connectivity while relishing the rustic tranquility of a rural setting. For the environmentally conscious, The Summit offers the benefits of natural gas, promising both sustainable living and cost-efficient energy solutions for residents.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Any company focused in real estate experiences ebb and flow with the market. Our land acquisition and development slowed to a halt after the 2008 crash, and home buying has been affected by the impacts of the COVID pandemic and rising interest rates. Fortunately, our expert team and solid financial backing have helped us ride out the rough patches seemingly effortlessly. We spend a lot of time in long-range planning and continually follow trends in the market so that we can anticipate the road ahead and correct for concerns. Rex Vick, Jr.’s insight and forecasting has allowed Windjam to position itself in up-and-coming areas well before the market’s notice which keeps the companies poised for success and always looking to the next project. With the assistance of strong legal advice via Jennifer Scott, our in-house General Counsel, we have been able to see success on tricky projects, be risk-averse when necessary, and navigate away from conflict so that we avoid legal pitfalls and unnecessary liability that can bog down other developers.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In addition to all the foregoing, Rex loves the fact that Grayson Vick, his daughter, has joined Windjam as COO. Grayson is a graduate of NC State, is a licensed broker, and is learning every aspect of the business, intending to continue the generational nature of the business for her father and grandfather.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
