Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Palmieri
Hi Samantha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am originally from Staten Island, NY born and raised. I became a police officer for the NYPD and was a cop for 3 years before deciding we wanted to move to NC. I met my now husband, Carlos, in the police academy and we got married and had our daughter Emily shortly after.
During my pregnancy I really struggled with my mental health and frankly did not think I would survive my battle. The first couple months of my pregnancy my grandmother was suffering from really bad dementia which made living at home very unhealthy for me. I ended up couch surfing between my best friend, my fiancé and some other family members. Once my mom moved back in state we lived together and I thought my mental health would balance out. It did not. Once my daughter was born I still struggled with my mental health and suffered from postpartum depression and anxiety. I was always told or always saw that being pregnant and becoming a mom was the best time of your life. I felt like something was wrong with me to hate it. I hated being pregnant and as much as I love my daughter I was struggling to be a mom.
A few weeks after Emily was born I joined a support group and realized I wasn’t the only person who felt like this. There are many others who also feel this way. I decided to start my own podcast. When it first launched it was called Living Simply with Sam but I actually just rebranded and it is now called the Modern Mom’s Club. The podcast allows me to share my thoughts and feelings about motherhood with my community and chat with other moms about various topics related to fitness, mental health, parenting, business. The list goes on and on.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely not been smooth. I started my podcast right around the time we ended up moving so I took a break to get settled into NC and my new job as a Sexual Assault Case Manager with Interact in Raleigh. A few months after I started I found myself interested in real estate and marketing. I started a new job with Northwood Ravin and I am currently their Leasing and Marketing Specialist for Carraway Village in Chapel Hill. There have been so many variables in my life the past couple years that it was hard to stay consistent with a lot of things. I was struggling with my fitness routine, with making time for my family, finding time to take care of myself but being a mom in general is dealing with all the things life throws at you while trying to keep your head above water.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So I am currently the Leasing and Marketing Specialist at Carraway Village in Chapel Hill. Carraway Village is a luxury apartment community and just opened their second phase which is the first high rise in Chapel Hill. I handle all of their social media, outreach, Preferred Employers Program as well as our VIP partnerships. I have been with the company, Northwood Ravin, for a year and a half and I love it. I feel like I really found my career and especially in this position I just love what I do.
I am most proud of the fact that I am excited to come into work everyday. I feel like most people live very monotonous lives and go through the motions whereas I am excited to come to work and do something I am passionate about (marketing, social media and networking).
On the flip side I am extremely proud of my podcast and very excited for it’s relaunch is just a few short weeks. My show has listeners in over 30 different countries and I have received an overwhelming amount of support from people who listen telling me that they can relate to my story and people thanking me for being so open and honest about how I felt because they feel less alone. I do hope to create a bigger community using my platforms and use my marketing skills to reach more women and mothers so they know they aren’t alone and they are amazing moms.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I put on a very happy face no matter what I do. Even if I am having the worst day, the second I step into work or start an interview there’s a smile on my face and I am doing what I have to do and showing up as the best version of myself. Most people probably wouldn’t know is that when I was pregnant I really contemplated giving up my battle with mental health. As a police officer I had the means to do so but I kept thinking of my daughter. She is the reason I am here today and fighting so hard to spread the importance of mental health in mothers.
