Rising Stars: Meet Sarah Price of Durham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Price

Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Long story long, in 2014 I started a clean beauty blog. While growing the blog I connected with small businesses in the clean beauty space and found myself doing freelance marketing. Think social media, blog posts, photography, copywriting, you name it. Starting that blog was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It was an incredible opportunity to learn marketing first-hand *and* build meaningful connections within the industry.

After graduating university, of those freelance gigs turned into a full-time job in social media & influencer marketing for an e-commerce wellness retailer. I threw myself into that position, leaving freelancing behind me.

Until 2020, when I started to feel that working for a more traditional marketing team wasn’t for me long term. I spent 2020 and 2021 growing the business until I took it full-time at the end of 2021. I chose to focus on food & wellness marketing because when I worked at the e-commerce wellness retailer, I always got so excited about the cool, trendy food and beverage brands we onboarded, with great packaging and an even better taste…until I saw their lackluster social media profiles. The marketing hype is always on beauty, fashion, and lifestyle – but food & wellness brands deserve a buzz-worthy social media presence.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The first year was rough. Three months after I took the business full-time, my dad died. I spent weeks taking care of him while desperately trying to keep my brand-new, baby business afloat. I ended up letting one client go because I simply couldn’t do it all. Another left a month after his death because they no longer had the budget. So there went half my income. And I had a lot of grieving and healing to do.

I spent the rest of the year doing just that – and growing the business. I released my first digital product (which is now a whole shop!), hired a copywriter and a designer to redo my website, and I took on a client who I still work with today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I run a social media management business that specializes in community-first marketing for food & wellness brands.

I’m known for being community-first. A lot of marketing decisions are made based on trends, competitors, or what the marketing team themselves want to create. And that is not how I work.

I work with my clients to deeply understand their customers – what drives them, what keeps them up at night, what they want to achieve – and create marketing content that speaks directly to those wants and needs. I firmly believe that customers aren’t buying a product, they’re buying a feeling or an experience.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I’ve worked with Meredith Youngson at Lake & Oak Tea for over three years, and I wouldn’t have the business I do without her. She’s been a client at every stage of my business, she’s been my sounding board for every new product and service I’ve launched, and she’s given my name to anyone who’s asked.
