Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Musgrave.
Hi Scott, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been a hairstylist since 1986 and specializing in curly hair in 2000 and my business really took off in 2013. I found that my industry treats wavy/curly hair as if there is something wrong with it – the stylists say they know how to work with curly hair but it is a ‘fix it’ mentality of straightening it and using tools on it and cutting techniques that make the curls dry, frizzy and unbalanced.
I came up with what I call Cubist Cutting and a salon experience that is designed to “EMBRACE YOUR CURLS’ and I teach you how to work with your hair so that you can have amazing hair for the rest of your life. It is unlike anything you can usually find in a salon.
My work got noticed online and I got requests for training hairstylists and I formed Curly Hair Artistry – it is a non-brand based (we can use any product we like to improve the health of the hair) and use a variety of cutting techniques that I came up with. I also came up with Cultivate Your Curls With The MAP Method of which is a unique way of applying products that improves your hair and teaches you how to use products.
I have trained hairstylists from around the globe, as well as, with my online courses, assisted people from all over the world to help embrace their wavy & curly hair.
I focus mainly on wavy & curly hair as there is a huge demand for help as many with wavy hair are treated more like straight hair and they do not have curls so they feel lost in where to fit in….so, I focus mainly on wavy and curls with medium to long hair.
I no longer cut straight hair and only focus on wavy and curly hair 100%.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been difficult to find good products as my industry likes to use shampoo and styling products with bad ingredients like silicones, waxes and excessive oils to ‘fix’ hair.
Over time small manufactures came out with great products using fantastic ingredients that help the hair to get better over time. In my industry most people’s hair gets worst over time – in my studio, I see hair come back in better condition but it gets heavy from growing out and just needs a shaping up. Most of my clients get 1-3 cuts a year and look great in between as they know how to do The MAP Method and to Cultivate Your Curls.
Since my industry uses not great products, I am not in their publications as I am non-brand based and manufactures can not tell me what to do or say….I am an independent and my clients trust me for what is best for them based on a variety of brands. I use more so than just one brand for everyone.
I am also a booth renter and do not have a large salon to train others in so I have to usually travel to salons willing to host my events as we use real models instead of mannequin heads.
I also perform my service in a unique way with teaching my clients to do their hair – I do not do it = they do it in my studio and then when they leave, they have the muscle memory and intuitive ability to manage their hair that is unlike any salon service out there.
Over time of doing this, I now have my new client get Cultivate Your Curls and do the session online at home so that all they need is the cut with me and when they arrive with beautiful hair, all they need is the cut and we are on the same page with how to work with it and we do not have to stress out about learning all of the new words and techniques and know about ingredients – they get all of that with Cultivate Your Curls.
Overall this is a unique way to work with clients that is not for everyone but the ones that do it end up saying it’s the best way to do it – they have lifetime access to me and the course to help them along with a great healthy Facebook community.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am proud of being one of the best curly hair specialists in the world based on articles about me that can be found in searches.
I am amazed at how a unique way of product application with The MAP Method and my Cubist Cutting with Curly Hair Artistry has helped hairstylists and clients around the world to help embrace their hair.
Over time I have found that it can be taken into the soul as well with “You do not have to be fixed, you just need to embrace more of who you already are”.
Hairstylists that take my trainings have gone on to open their own salons, develop a team, get out of debt and finally take vacations. They sell more retail and have an optimistic reality-based perspective on marketing and how to conduct themselves as an entrepreneur.
I have taken these principles in working with hairstylists and used this knowledge to help other entrees as well in many other fields different from what I do.
I encourage anyone to follow their intuition, their gut and step out in faith to take a healthy risk to make their dreams come true – and its good to have a mentor or guide to assist when needed and I am grateful to be there for some entrepreneurs on a weekly/monthly basis.
Having hobbies with grilling, juggling, photography and journaling help to balance out the energy I have as an introvert working with people….I do enjoy being by myself and cooking food or reading….then I am ready to be with my wife and twin boys.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I am a Christian and prayer and faith give me hope. Without hope, I would not be here today.
I pray, step out in faith and let God guide me as I feel it, I act on it.
It is from being obedient to God that I am blessed with things that are going on that I could never have imagined.
Many years ago, I set aside many of my pursuits and focused on one thing….curly hair. It was in my journal time with God I was asked, “What do you love to do” and I responded with “working with curly hair.” And I then heard in my soul, “Tell the world” – so, I did.
As an introvert, it was hard! I never wrote but I started a blog and it took off. I do not speak and now I teach. I do not do video and now I do YouTube….and more.
The point is that if you pray then you should be able to sense a movement to take and to step out in faith to learn if it works or does not work….you learn what to do the next time.
