Today we’d like to introduce you to Shae Shufelt.
Hi Shae, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I went back to school for Interior Design and graduated with my degree in 2016. Previously, I had been working in billing for a major telecom company and needed a creative outlet. Since then, I’ve worked on the more technical side of design for home builders and engineers but also (and more frequently) on the creative end, designing model homes and working alongside top, established local designers. My husband and I welcomed the birth of our son in early 2020. After spending some time being solely a mom, I decided to step out on my own, and thus Dylan Design was born – a homage to our son, Dylan. Becoming a mom encouraged me to take the first steps toward operating my own business, which brings me so much gratitude and reward amid this venture’s challenges, often demanding a courageous and persistent approach.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
The ebb and flow of this line of work can be challenging. Sometimes you have many projects on your plate, while at other times, you find your schedule has lightened. Remaining proactive and not deflated during the “lighter’ periods has been an important lesson.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Largely, I work in residential design. I am interested in all projects, from new builds, home renovations, and smaller projects where we may add some new furniture pieces or change paint colors. I also dabble in commercial jobs when the opportunity arises and enjoy the mix. I enjoy projects reviving a home where the homeowner has a fresh new space to come home to. I love designing baby and children’s spaces because you can be playful with theme and color. I work hard to actively listen and be available to my clients so that the design process is always current with client needs and preferences.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check?
I find true crime podcasts keep my mind sharp and engaged while at home designing for a project. Haha. On a more serious note, I enjoy reading and listening to books about our brains’ power and capabilities for change. The one I’m currently reading is called Suggestible You. Many things we tell ourselves (which may not always be beneficial) can be things we “untell” ourselves, and I find that enlightening and applicable to almost any aspect of life. I follow Chused & Co and Amber Interiors on Instagram and find their work very inspirational, particularly their attention to lines, texture, and scale.
