Rising Stars: Meet Shreya Phadke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shreya Phadke.

Hi Shreya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in Mumbai, India, my affinity for colors and textures was evident from an early age. While pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Mass Media Advertising, I delved into the realm of basic photography. Post-graduation, my passion led me to enroll in a two-year diploma program focused on fashion photography. 

By the age of 19, I was already immersed in event photography, and upon completing my diploma, I transitioned into the role of a fashion photographer. Joining the New York Film Academy marked a pivotal point in my journey, as I specialized in crafting dynamic fashion images in my home country, India. New York had always been the city of my dreams, especially for its thriving art and fashion scene. 

My fascination with the intricate details of fashion—from colors and textures to patterns and prints—continued to evolve. Despite not fully grasping the entirety of what the fashion world entailed, I found myself irresistibly drawn to it, and photography became my gateway into this captivating realm. Today, I am proud to be working as a fashion photographer in the vibrant and dynamic city of New York, where my journey has come full circle. This narrative serves as a testament to my love for the art of fashion and the vibrant tapestry it weaves in the world of photography. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I tend to view life with a glass-half-full perspective. When faced with challenges, my inclination is to acknowledge the issue, accept it, and focus on finding solutions rather than dwelling on the problem itself. In response to the question posed—no, the journey thus far hasn’t been easy. The road leading to this point has been arduous. A significant setback occurred when my previous college professor in India discarded my entire final project, deeming it worthless. While this criticism was a difficult moment that shook my confidence, it was just one part of the learning process. 

Recovering from such setbacks took time, and regaining complete confidence was a gradual process. However, the unwavering support from my parents and friends played a crucial role in this journey. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of encountering incredible individuals who have consistently offered support and assistance. Their contributions have been instrumental in enabling me to pursue my goals. Although I recognize that I have a long way to go and have not yet achieved my ultimate aspirations, the knowledge that I am on the path toward them is gratifying enough. This journey, as challenging as it may be, is made meaningful by the network of support and the valuable lessons learned along the way. 

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a fashion photographer with a profound passion for the world of fashion. My fascination lies in the intricate process of bringing a piece of clothing to life, employing a blend of creativity and the pursuit of aesthetic perfection. The challenge of working with various elements and exploring different permutations and combinations to enhance visual appeal has always captivated me. Combining my love for fashion with my skills in photography felt like a natural and inevitable choice. 

In my work, I strive to challenge conventional gender norms and redefine perceptions of reality. Each garment or subtle nuance in makeup presents a unique opportunity to weave compelling narratives that broaden my creative horizons, one captivating image at a time. 

What brings me the greatest sense of pride is the collaborative effort of the talented team I’ve had the privilege of working with. Whether it’s fashion designers, stylists, makeup artists, hairstylists, or models, each member has not only contributed to our collective creations but has also imparted valuable lessons in both my personal and professional life. The synergy we’ve achieved together fills me with pride, and it is this collaborative spirit that sets my work apart from others in the industry. 

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
One valuable insight I wish I had when embarking on my journey is the realization that our creative endeavors are not entirely unprecedented. As humans, we are connected to a rich history, and the ideas we conceive have likely been explored by someone before us. However, what truly sets individuals apart is their unique perspective on those ideas. A wise professor once emphasized to me that while everything else may seem taken, you remain the one distinct variable, and that notion has stayed with me. 

In this industry, cultivating patience and conducting thorough research is equally vital. A broad spectrum of knowledge, extending beyond photography to encompass relevant fields, is crucial. Surprisingly, my two decades of training in Indian classical dance unexpectedly proved beneficial in guiding models with posing—an unforeseen synergy that adds depth to my work. 

For those venturing into this field, my advice is to embrace the understanding that uniqueness lies in your interpretation of shared ideas. Also, exercise patience and dedicate time to extensive research. A diverse knowledge base, even beyond your primary discipline, can bring unexpected advantages. Remember, in a world where much seems explored, your distinct perspective remains your greatest asset. Models with posing, but here we are.
