Rising Stars: Meet The Hodnett Family Band of Bahama, NC

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Hodnett Family Band.

Hi The Hodnett Family, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We are a family bluegrass and gospel band from central NC. As 3rd and 4th generation musicians, each of us have grown up around music and started playing at early ages. Specifically for our family, we started singing in church with our dad when we were little, and as we learned instruments, we added them to the music. In 2020, we really started taking music as a band more seriously. We put on several Facebook livesstream shows to encourage ourselves and our family and friends back when we were all stuck at home. When everything started opening back up, we started booking shows. The first big thing for us was getting accepted to compete in Silver Dollar City’s youth band competition in Branson, MO in 2022–and that was so much fun that we’ve been back every year since then to play in the park. Another highlight was getting to play on Woodsongs Kids in summer of 2023. In 20204 and 2025 we had the opportunity to join the cast of Smoky Mountain Tunes and Tales in downtown Gatlinburg, TN, which is so special for us to be a part of. It is such a fun experience getting to share our music with so many people and in so many different places. From the theme parks and PBS television to the many churches and coffee shops and all in between, each place has brought us new friends and memories that we are so thankful for.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge has been booking shows and making good contacts. We get great response from our audience and those that call themselves fans really like what we do (which we don’t take for granted) but keeping a consistent schedule with quality shows that put gas in the car can be discouraging. The thing is…it’s so much fun each chance we get to play, each opportunity to see folks smile that we just have to keep on trying!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Being a bluegrass band, musicianship and strong vocals are a big part of what we do. We are, of course, a family band which makes us different from a lot of bands. It seems that our closeness as a family also brings us close to our audience. People often mention that it’s refreshing to see a family working and playing together.

We love to play music! Our favorite audience? Anyone who enjoys what we do and gives back a smile. Making music is fun but it’s so much better when we’re all having a good time!

Our biggest accomplishment is probably the last show we played or maybe the next show on the calendar or possibly the latest show we booked. Each new step is exciting, and we can’t wait what’s in store!

What makes you happy?
As a band and as musicians it’s very satisfying to play the perfect notes or to sing in perfect harmony. We will never grow tired of that, but as we’ve said already, it’s the most fun for us if it’s fun for our audience
