Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiauna McKinney.
Hi Tiauna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I started doing lashes in March 2019 as a freshman in college. I’ve always loved the beauty industry, but I never thought to make a career out of it, I was just looking to create a “side hustle”. At the peak of the pandemic, I decided that I wanted to take lash artistry seriously; I was not happy with my job at the time and I knew I had a talent that would allow me to be creative while still making money.
I decided to quit my full-time position as a leasing agent and work for myself full time, I did not have many clients at this time, but I was so determined to make things work. I used social media to promote myself and my business as much as possible and it worked!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Things have not always been smooth, I struggled most with balancing school and work. When I made my business my full-time job, I was a Junior in College at East Carolina. At this point, I knew that I did not have much interest in my degree and that I wanted to be a beauty professional, but I felt it was important to finish what I started & I did not want to drop out.
I recently graduated college on time in May 2022. Although my career plans changed, going to college really helped me to learn a lot about myself, also balancing the two helped me to learn discipline.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an Eyelash Technician
I offer eyelash extensions in an array of lash styles. I think I’m most known for my versatility; I customize each set to fit my client’s eye shape, lifestyle and preferences.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’m not sure I believe in luck; I can’t say I’m lucky to be in this position because when I recognized that this was my path, I put the work in. Things did not come easy! It’s a journey, all the moments that feel like “bad luck” has taught me a lesson. I’ve had many bumps in the road, but I know that this is my path, so I try not to dwell on the bad things.
I don’t think I could have made it this far with luck, bad or good.
