Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria King.
Hi Victoria, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
The love of photography really started for me in Lagos, Portugal. The sun was sitting above the Atlantic, casting the turquoise waters into a breathtaking, almost unbelievable sight. I stood there mesmerized: I had to capture this. My phone camera felt incredibly inadequate; it couldn’t translate the sheer scale or the warmth of the moment. It was a perfect moment that I knew my memory wouldn’t do justice to.
When I returned home, the memory of Lagos was the first thing I chased. I started looking on facebook marketplace and found it—a sturdy, entry-level DSLR. From that day on, I was dedicated to learning the language of light and shadow, aperture and shutter speed, honing my craft with the singular goal of preserving moments with the clarity and emotion they deserved.
That journey eventually led me back to people. I started with simple portrait work, finding immense joy in capturing the authentic smiles and quiet connections of individuals and families. Now, I’m taking the leap into weddings and elopements, a true privilege. There is nothing I love more than capturing those irreplaceable moments in time—the first look, the tearful vows, the joyous dance—allowing families to have tangible, beautiful memories for years to come.
While my personal work eventually led me to portraits, my love quickly became editorial shoots. I discovered a different kind of excitement here—the ability to create something bold and breathtaking from scratch. Working with teams, crafting a visual narrative, and pushing creative boundaries is incredible fun. I love the energy and the challenge of producing images that are visually stunning and deeply impactful. It all started with a view in Portugal that was too beautiful to lose, and now, I get to make sure others never lose theirs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, my journey has been a pretty smooth road, and I owe a lot of that ease to my professional life. Since I work full-time in tech, my photography business is currently a passion-driven side hustle. This structure is truly an advantage: it allows me to be highly selective, picking up only the shoots I can fully devote all of my energy into. Instead of chasing volume, I focus on quality, which means avoiding a packed week of overwhelming appointments. While the dream is certainly for this to become my full-time job, for now, I’m genuinely enjoying the fun of it all. The financial stability from my tech career removes the pressure to take on uninspiring jobs, keeping my creative passion pure and focused.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My bread and butter is editorial photography, where I thrive on the collaborative energy and the challenge of crafting bold visuals.
I am known for my dedication to quality over volume and for producing work that is intentional and often dramatic.
What truly sets me apart is the structure of my business and my ability to adjust my style based on a client or shoots need. While I love a dark, moody, bold shoot there are times where timeless, light and airy are more suitable and with creative work being able to switch back and forth is something that has been incredibly beneficial.
Ultimately, I am most proud of my ability to take something that could have been a fleeting moment and turn it into a tangible memory that my clients are able to experience for years to come.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
In life and in my business, my values center on connection, creativity, and conservation. Professionally, photography is more than a job—it’s the medium through which I translate the world’s beauty into tangible art, from the bold visual narratives of editorial work to the intimate joy of weddings. Outside of my work, the ocean serves as my greatest source of inspiration and peace; its vastness and power consistently remind me of the beauty and scale I strive to capture. Finally, animals hold a special place in my heart, reminding me of the pure, unconditional connections that exist in the world, which often informs the authentic emotion I look for in my work. Ultimately, what matters most is using my craft to honor these beautiful elements and ensuring my art reflects these deeply held personal passions.
