We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
For me, the day before I have a scheduled event I try to make sure I have all of my photography/videography equipment is ready. I make sure all my batteries are charged, memory cards are cleared and I have my bag ready for the day. The day of I make sure I give myself enough time to prepare for the event such as getting there early enough to set up. I am also a published author which I will set up my books (Letters from My Heart and Healing Era) for display.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Aaliyah Lane and I am a photographer, videographer, and published poet. I am from Fayetteville, NC and living out my dreams doing what I love. I also have a blog website where I write and post photos of my work and a website. My brand name is Hazel’s Eyes Media, I have had my brand for three years. My brand is unique because I can attend any kind of events such as sporting events, engagements, birthday parties, and more. I started my brand off of faith, my inner knowing kept saying to buy a camera and I hesitated for awhile about it. I felt a lot of people was already photographers in my city but I had to realize that everyone doesn’t have the same energy as me and what is meant for me will always find me. I bought my camera and ventured out to local community events to get my name out there and I have been flourishing ever since.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was lost in the world, I was trying to figure out who I was called to be in this world. After high school, I attended College and changed my major three times because I didn’t know what I wanted to do in life. I just knew art was a big part of my life and that was my calling. With poetry, I was able to write out past trauma and hurt which helped me release the pain but also help others get through what they were going through.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
A little less than a year in I almost gave up on photography and videography. I felt it wasn’t going anywhere but little did I know, everything was coming together in perfect timing. I started traveling more, taking photos of celebrities, out of town gigs and gained more notoriety in my hometown. The moment I thought I was going to give up doors opened up on my behalf.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That photography/videography is over saturated. I was a little discouraged hearing this but I learned that is not true. There are so many different events that need coverage waiting for someone like you to shine your light and to do the work you was called to do.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
People will most likely misunderstand my legacy thinking everything was handed to me. I worked hard, saved up my money to purchase all the equipment I have for my business. I didn’t receive any handouts, I stayed focus and got everything I needed and created a name for myself by myself. When it came to publishing my books I did the proper research and learned trial and error to get to the level of success that I am at now. It took hard work, dedication and perseverance.
