We’re looking forward to introducing you to Allison Neiss. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Allison, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
The most surprising thing I’ve noticed about my customers is how much they respond to the style of my work. My pottery has a coastal, fluttery look that’s not something people usually see, and it’s been really interesting to see how that difference catches their attention. Often they’ll pause, look closely, and tell me they haven’t seen anything like it before.
What I love is that their reaction is similar to how I felt when I first started making this style—there’s something exciting about discovering something new that draws you in. Seeing that same feeling in others has been really meaningful, and it reminds me that staying true to what I love can resonate with people in unexpected ways.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Allison, the artist behind Allison Neiss Pottery. I create handbuilt ceramic pieces inspired by the coast, with soft, fluttery forms that feel a little unexpected. Each piece is made slowly and intentionally, allowing the shape and movement to develop naturally rather than forcing it into something rigid. What makes my work special to me is that it doesn’t follow trends or traditional rules, it’s about creating pottery that feels expressive and personal. Right now, I’m focused on continuing to explore new forms and surfaces while staying true to the style that first pulled me into clay.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
What breaks the bonds between people is often a loss of trust. It can happen when someone feels let down or misled, and once trust is gone, it’s not easy to restore. What rebuilds it is honesty, open communication, and a mutual willingness to work on the relationship. For me, honesty is especially important in my work. One time, a customer order was damaged during firing and stuck to the kiln shelf. I immediately reached out, explained exactly what happened, and restarted the process so they would receive a beautiful piece. Being transparent like that is how I maintain trust and show that I care about the people I’m connected with.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There was a time recently when I almost gave up on a custom order. I had handbuilt a large bowl, and when I measured it, it was far too big for my kiln. Some people suggested starting over or taking it to a kiln studio, but I wanted to use my own kiln so I could have full control of the process. After some careful adjustments, I was able to shave it down safely and get it to fit, finishing the piece perfectly. There were moments I considered giving my customer their money back, but completing it was one of my proudest accomplishments.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friend would probably say that what really matters to me is my connections with people. I care deeply about getting to know others on a meaningful level and sharing time together that feels genuine and present. I value supporting each other through both the highs and the lows, showing compassion, and not giving up when things get hard. To me, relationships are about mutual care, understanding, and presence, and those are the things I hold most dear in life.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes, absolutely. Sometimes I do it for myself. One of my core beliefs is in achievement and responsibility; when I say I’m going to do something, I follow through and take ownership of it. Even if no one is watching or praising me, I hold myself accountable and do my best because it’s important to my own moral compass. For me, doing things well isn’t about recognition; it’s about staying true to my word and my values.
