Story & Lesson Highlights with Betty Vandivier of Cary

We recently had the chance to connect with Betty Vandivier and have shared our conversation below.

Betty, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My biggest source of joy is my son, Weston. He’s heading into middle school, and it’s been such a fun (and sometimes emotional!) time watching him grow into his own person. Whether we’re just hanging out, or I’m cheering him on during a soccer game, being his mom is the most rewarding part of my life.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Betty! Brianna and I opened Rose & Stone Salon in Cary, NC in June 2021 and it’s been non stop ever since! I’m a boy mom, coffee lover, and true crime junkie who turned a front desk job at a hair salon into a full blown passion behind the chair. With over a decade of experience, I specialize in all things blonding! Building a buisness from the ground up with my best friend has been a dream come true. We have truly cultivated a place where our clients feel like family. We have a small space, creating a more one on one experience.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Growing up, I often believed I was “too much” – too loud, too strong willed, too emotional. Over time, I’ve come to realize all of those things actually make me who I am, and they have been pieces of me becoming the mom, stylist, friend, and business owner that I am. I no longer see them as flaws – I now know that they’re strengths.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
In November of 2021, I had brain surgery to remove a tumor from my frontal lobe. Following that, I stopped trying to hide my pain – physically, emotionally, and mentally – and started using it as fuel for my growth. That experience shook me to my core, but it also gave me such a deeper perspective, more empathy, and a stronger sense of purpose. It reminded me that I am capable of hard things, asking for help 😜, and that being vulnerable can actually be one of my greatest sources of strength.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to believe that my hometown roots completely defined who I was- that I had to stay close to where I came from to stay true to myself. Leaving the town I grew up in at 19 years old and all that was familiar to me grew me in ways I could’ve never imagined. It forced me out of my comfort zone, taught me independence, perspective, and that home isn’t just where you’re from, but what you build for yourself.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
Definitely when I’m with my family. There’s something so grounding and comforting about being surrounded by the people who know you at your core and love you unconditionally.
