Story & Lesson Highlights with Kia Sutton of Raleigh

Kia Sutton shared her story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Kia, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I recently conducted my first floral arranging class at a private birthday party for the wife of a retired NFL player and her closest friends and family. . Overcoming the nervousness and first time jitters and stepping into an ever familiar teaching mode, brought me great joy and pride. The guest of honor and her guests were very enthusiastic and eager to learn about the aesthetics of creating the arrangements and caring for live flowers.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the owner and CEO of Kreative Initiatives and Associates, LLC. We provide event planning and design services to personal and business clients all across the state of NC and travel to other states when needs and/or wants arise. We also provide various live flower options in forms of bouquets, event arrangements of all sizes and are working on providing larger floral installations. . We currently only provide fresh floral services but plan to include silk as we grow in the realm of large floral installations . Through experience and networking, we partner with floral wholesalers, prop designers, balloon artists, djs, bartenders, light production teams, event furniture rental companies, photographers, and caterers to provide full service events . In the future, we will continue to add services and certifications to our resume in order to give our clients top tier service.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My children taught me the most about work. Motherhood pushed me to tap into hidden talents and suppressed dreams. It impelled me to seek stability but also challenged me to stretch my creativity and explore new, uncharted territory. Twenty-one and seventeen years ago, two new lives depended on my every step and I pledged to become an extraordinary model for them to follow and continue to work at it daily.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Through suffering, I learned to explore and design new plans of success. Suffering restores the hunger that often fades as one gets tired of doing the same things repeatedly. When my event calendar is not as occupied as I want it, I begin seeking educational opportunities in the event field, exploring new design ideas and learning about horticulture and floriculture.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closet friends would say that relationships matter to me. This includes with family, friends, colleagues and my
clients. They’d agree that I am
not overly concerned with things that I can’t change or control and will walk away from certain situations rather than go back and forth or lose my cool.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
I know that I am out of my depth when my
creative control is non existent. I prefer to use my experience and knowledge in the event industry to create lasting memories for my clients. I do not seek to carry out someone else’s plans to a tee. I have seldom gotten requests to create something “exactly like this”.. Instead, I request pictures of inspiration .
