Yvonne Cano shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Yvonne, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
The moment that has made me feel proud recently was when I received the Award from Diamante Latino in the Business Category. This has been a huge milestone for me and my business, and makes me feel valued by being recognized by my community. It also makes me excited about what is to come!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the creative behind Yvonne Cano Image, a US-based agency specializing in Image and Brand Consulting with a worldwide outlook.
I am a passionate entrepreneur and a certified Image Consultant with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, dedicated to empowering individuals through the art of Personal branding and Color Analysis. My commitment to excellence in business was recognized with the prestigious Latino Diamante Award for Business. As a judge and sponsor for both the Miss North Carolina and Miss America organizations, I have played an integral role in fostering talent and confidence among young women.
With expertise as a makeup artist, I have honed my craft in the beauty industry and developed a unique Color Analysis Method and Certification designed to be inclusive of all skin tones and undertones. This innovative approach led also to the creation of my own makeup brand, complemented by color analysis materials and drapes tailored for color consultants.
I participated in Season 13 of the reality show “The Blox,” which showcased entrepreneurs, further highlighting my commitment to the community participating with The Positive Impact Project. I have also had the privilege of engaging as a speaker at various women’s events and organizing fashion shows that celebrate diversity and empowerment.
In addition to my entrepreneurial endeavors, I have experience in public image strategies, providing support for political campaigns. My work has garnered recognition in prominent media outlets such as Influencer Daily, US Insider, Disrupt Magazine, Canvas Rebel, and Voyage Raleigh.
I look forward to continuing her journey of inspiration and empowerment, helping others unlock their full potential.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My parents have been a big inspiration when it comes to hard work and discipline. They not only taught me to be responsible, but showed me by example how effort and consistency pay off. I would say this sense of pride in working hard comes from my grandparents, too. I come from a family of entrepreneurs and very goal-driven people.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
Prior to launching my business, I experienced a period of depression. It was challenging to acknowledge my need for assistance, as I had always been perceived as the strong one, the go-to person for support. Furthermore, within my cultural context, seeking help was viewed as a sign of weakness, so I consistently presented a cheerful facade, despite my internal struggles. However, a turning point occurred when I could no longer maintain this pretense, and I resolved to seek help. This realization led to the discovery of my true purpose and prompted me to openly address the misconception that depression and anxiety define weakness. Instead, I came to understand that recognizing the need for support is where true strength resides. Recognizing this, I felt it was essential to share this understanding with other women, and it became empowering to leverage my abilities to support them.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m super passionate about making sure everyone gets a fair shot and that we all have equal opportunities. I want to be a role model, showing how someone like me – a Mexican immigrant – can make a real difference. I’m all about breaking down barriers for women, especially in business, so they can reach their goals. I also believe in coming up with new ideas and policies that make the world a more just place for our kids. I’m always here for my community, and I’m really against racism, working towards healing and understanding instead.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
It is my aspiration that I be remembered as a courageous individual, unafraid to voice my opinions, steadfast in my advocacy for what is just, and compassionate towards all. I strived to be a loving mother, wife, sister, daughter, and friend, and it is my hope that I may encourage others to pursue their aspirations, as I have done. Ultimately, it is my desire that I be perceived as a resilient person, unwavering in my belief in fairness, and dedicated to the protection of those I cherish.
