Yvonda Seda of Raleigh on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Yvonda Seda. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Yvonda, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
A common misconception about being a solo esthetician is that it’s all relaxing facials, flexible hours, and skincare fun. While I genuinely love what I do, running this business is far from easy. I’m not just performing services – I’m managing everything behind the scenes: scheduling, marketing, inventory, finances, client communication… all of it. It’s physically demanding, and it takes emotional energy, especially when you’re the only one responsible for every detail. People see the beauty of the final result, but not always the hustle that makes it all possible.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Yvonda Seda, and I’m the owner of Perfected Beauty, where I specialize in customized skincare and hair removal treatments. I’ve been a licensed esthetician since 2014 and a licensed nail technician since 2009. In 2021, I expanded my journey by becoming an educator in both fields, and I’ve been passionate about sharing knowledge and elevating others ever since.

What makes Perfected Beauty unique is my commitment to personalization – every treatment, whether it’s a corrective skincare service or something as quick as a lip wax, is tailored to each client’s specific needs. I was also one of the first estheticians in my area to offer sugaring hair removal, and now I train others in that technique. Helping my clients feel confident in their skin is incredibly rewarding, and teaching other professionals to expand their skills has become just as fulfilling.

I started this business with no clients and a lot of determination. At one point, I was working up to four jobs at once just to keep it going – budgeting my business rent right into my personal bills until I could start building a steady clientele. Every step of the journey has taught me something, and that’s led me to a new venture: I’m now developing a consulting business to help other small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. I know how overwhelming it can be to build something from the ground up, and I’m excited to use my experience to support others doing the same.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I think what breaks the bonds between people most often is a lack of understanding and communication. When people stop listening to each other – or assume instead of ask – it creates distance. In my work, trust is everything. If someone feels unseen, unheard, or dismissed, even unintentionally, that connection can quickly fall apart.

What restores those bonds is empathy. Taking the time to truly listen, acknowledge someone’s experience, and show up with honesty and care can make all the difference. Whether it’s with a client, a peer, or someone in your personal life, rebuilding trust takes consistency, patience, and humility. It’s not about being perfect – it’s about being present.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me how to pivot. When things don’t go as planned – when money is tight, when you’re exhausted, when the support you hoped for isn’t there – you’re forced to get creative and find a way forward anyway. It teaches you how to stretch what you have, how to adapt, and how to keep showing up even when it’s hard.

Success feels good, but it doesn’t always build the same kind of strength or resilience. The difficult seasons are what showed me what I’m truly capable of. They taught me to problem-solve, to stay grounded, and to be resourceful. More importantly, they gave me empathy – so now, when someone else is struggling, I understand what that feels like. I can meet them where they are, because I’ve been there too.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in the beauty industry is that results should be instant – or that there’s a “perfect” version of beauty everyone should strive for. There’s so much pressure to market quick fixes, flawless skin, or pain-free services, when the truth is that real results take time, consistency, and sometimes discomfort. Growth and change don’t happen overnight, and real beauty isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Another lie is that more is always better – more products, more treatments, more trends. But what really matters is what works for that individual. I’ve built my business around customized care for that reason: every client’s skin, body, and goals are different. What works for one person might not work for another, and that’s okay. The best results come from tuning in – not piling on.

Lastly, I think as professionals, we sometimes get caught up in comparison. The industry can make it easy to believe that what’s most important is what looks good online or what’s trending. But real impact doesn’t come from what’s flashy- it comes from connection, consistency, and care. That’s where I try to keep my focus, even when the industry noise gets loud.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
What would remain is my drive, my heart for helping people, and my willingness to keep going even when things get hard. Underneath the titles – esthetician, educator, business owner – I’m someone who deeply believes in service, growth, and connection.

I’ve had to rebuild more than once, and I know that everything outside of you can shift or disappear. But the part of me that keeps showing up, that finds a way, that pours into others – that part has always been there. And that’s what really defines me – not the role I have, but the way I move through life and support others while doing it.
